My family & I will be in Kuala Lumpur end-November for a week's holiday. Can anyone suggest to me what places of interest to visit? This is my 2nd trip. My 1st trip was 3 years ago. One more thing that I can't figure out. Why taxi drivers some times don't switch on their taxi meters. If you take taxi from Sunway Pyramid, from Mines Shopping Fair to city centre, they ask for RM50. I'm sure if you go by the meter, it wouldn't be that much. Another thing, some taxi are very reluctant to send us to the zoo. They said very far away. Surely that's bad.

Im staying in KL, and yes, i agree with you about the taxis. THe problem is that there isnt a governing body who regulates how they operate, ie whether or not they turn on their meters or whether or not they discriminate among destinations.
But the sad truth is, these taxis, especially from those areas which you've mentioned will most likely to have remained the same since your last visit. Places like sunway pyramid and the mines are virtually "monopolised" by those groups of taxis.
One reason for this is the unavailability of other modes of transportation. For example, in the Mines area, there are no buses, the KTM (train) station is quite far away, and also few taxis are available.
Another reason is that some places like Sunway have their "premier" taxi stations which only allow a certain groups of taxis to take customers from their shopping centres. For example, these "premier" taxis will charge you RM 30 to get to the KL city. So the taxis which are scrounging along the main streets (who are not premier taxis) will be asking for RM 25 because they know you have no choice!
One way to overcome this is.. for example, if you were to go to Sunway again, instead of taking a cab all the way back to KL, take a cab to the Kelana Jaya LRT station. From there, you can either take the LRT to KLCC (the Petronas Twin Towers, where you can shop some more :p) OR better still, take the free shuttle to One Utama shopping centre or to Ikano Power Centre, where Ikea is! :)
Whereas for Mines, i have really no solution as that are is really lacking of other public transportation. But one possible alternative is getting a cab to the Serdang KTM station. By train, you can either go to KL Central, or to Midvalley Shopping Centre..
And one thing to just keep in mind is that you confirm with the taxi driver that he's gona charge according to the meter, OR if he's not going to, at least come to an understanding as to how much you will be paying BEFORE you even get into the taxi..
As for other places to visit, what about Aquaria? Its situated within the KLCC convention centre itself, with lots of different kinds of sea creatures, as well as a tunnel within the pool which is quite impressive.

You have to be really careful with taxi drivers. Tell them to switch on their meters! They're reluctant to drive far because they're lazy.
You should visit Putrajaya :) You can't miss it. Sunway Lagoon has changed a lot since you were last there and Sunway Pyramid has improved as well so you might wanna go there for some family fun. One Utama shopping mall is a great choice for shopping if you don't feel like going to KLCC or MidValley Megamall, it has also been renovated and now has a new wing. It has almost everything.
If you're looking for brands like Louis Vuitton or Gucci... KLCC and Starhill would be the best choice. Or if you want the cheaper options go to Petaling Street, Chinatown.

Try to get on a taxi which is queing at a taxi stand. They have to switch on their meter if they are picking up passengers from these stands, otherwise you can report them (as this is what i have heard from a nice taxi driver). If there are no taxi stands around, just try a few before you get one.
Another way to avoid being cheated by these taxi drivers is try to find a rough idea about the fare to the destination (by asking around), then when entering the taxi, mention this price to the driver so as to let him know that you know the price and he can't cheat you on this (if he doesn't want to switch on the meter)
Well, i m living in Kuala Lumpur too... and sometimes really hate these type of taxi drivers who will just do anything to earn a little bit more money. But, there are still some who are really nice ^_^

well.... of course u shud go to KLCC & KL Tower.
If u r into shopping KL (abbv. for Kuala Lumpur) is juz the right place.... You can shop in the super big Midvalley Megamall, Suria KLCC, Berjaya Times Square, One Utama (OU) or mayb Sunway Pyramid.
If u wanna hav some fun I suggest you to go to either Sunway Lagoon or Genting Highlands. There are shuttle buses operating from KL Sentral (1/2-1 hour frequency).... u can buy the entrance ticket + shuttle fare together there.......
There are other places like Putrajaya, the zoo, tyhe museum, etc........ Im not sure why but usually it depends on where u r taking the taxi from....

These scams are real.
Kuala Lumpur has things that should be seen if you can go to Malaysia. However, when I was there for the second time, I got scammed out of $400. Others have lost $10000 or more. This really ruined my trip because I was a bit shook up. Yesterday I was surprised to read three stories of other people who had almost the same scams happen to them. This was truly healing to hear that others had experienced such difficulties and embarrassment.
I would like to suggest that if someone is going to KL, then they check out these three stories at virtualtourist.com under Scams & Confidence Tricksters.
I love Malaysia and plan to go back soon.
Penang is a great place to go because you get to experience so much of the Malaysian culture. Melaka is great for seeing the history of the nation. I enjoyed a park in Melaka that has actual full size homes from each state of Malaysia.

most of the tourists attractions have been mentioned above, so i wouldn't talk much about it.
fyi, very important!! if taxi drivers don't switch on their meters, don't ever enter. they're trying to makan your money!! meaning that they're cheating you. and as far as i know, frm sunway to mines doesn't cost RM 50!!
well, i dunno bout the reluctancy on sending passengers to zoo negara. that's pretty weird, it's only about 15 km frm klcc to the zoo.

Insists on them putting on the meter. And yes, it will be cheaper by meter. Go to KLCC, mid valley, chinatown. lot's of things to see and buy!
