get U2's Best of 1980-1990.
You will be blown away.
once you are familiar with their songs and their style, then try "the joshua tree" in all it's entirety, because that album is freaking genius. the way the songs are arranged, the incredible poeticness of the entire album to portray a place of desolation and spirit, etc. You don't want to overlook the songs on that album that weren't released as singles, because they really speak to you. It shows how great U2 were back then =)
Then, to fully appreciate U2's ability to change with the times and reinvent themselves, but still being able to sound signaturely U2, you MUST listen to "achtung baby". Time and time again, throughout various U2 polls, "joshua tree" and "achtung baby" always go head to head as fan's favorite U2 album, and there's a reason for that. this album has so many emotions and U2 portrays them all so well. This album "saved" U2, as they describe it in retrospect. It was made during a time when the band was at a metaphorical "civil war" with eachother. Riding off the recent success of Joshua Tree, which catapulted this little band with great potential into international superstardom, half wanted to follow that formula, and the other half of U2 wanted to exlore new sounds. What you get is a perfect marriage of the originality of their new experimentation and the traditionality of how they function best as a band. This is the album that has "one" on it. Actually, "one" was the song that saved the band. they were all mad at eachother, and on the brink of breaking up, when Larry overheard Edge playing some chords by himself in a room. He loved it an immediately started improvising some drums, while Bono walks in an improvises some lyrics. "Is it getting better?
Or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you now?
You got someone to blame You say
One love
One life" is about how they were all blaming eachother, when they realized that they're one, and they moved on and made possibly one of the most important albums in rock history.
Adam comes in and the birth of one of the greatest songs ever written occurred. Bono says in interviews all the time that this song is probably one of their most misunderstood. because the "one" theme is so idealistic and romantic, it can be taken to be an uplifting song, but Bono points out that it was written about bitterness and the need to work out problems in a relationship instead of just letting the relationship die. other standout songs on achtung baby include "acrobat", "ultraviolet", and "The Fly". the Edge is on FIRE.

many U2 fans overlook "pop" as U2's wierd dance electornica experiemnt era. they see it as U2 trying to reinvent thesmelves with the change of the times again, but it really is a great album. It does take some getting used to, you gotta let it grow on you. I suggest listening to this album after listneing to their most recent post 2000 works "all that you can't leave behind" and "How to dismantle an atomic bomb", both which have similar themes such as love, faith, and family. these two are often seen as a couple, since they're similar in style, and some songs on "bomb" were taken from outtakes of "all that you can't leave behind". The songs on these album definitely reflect a more mellow, poppy sound than the 1980s U2 that produced hits like "sunday bloody sunday" and "pride", but these songs are great songs nonetheless. They really speak to the soul, they inspire, and they carry strong messages that brought people together after 9-11. this is where you get "beautiful day", "elevation", "walk on", "Stuck in a moment", "Sometimes you can't make it on your own", etc.

sorry that was pretty long, but I'm a HUGE U2 fan as you can tell. U2 are an amazing live band. Live is where they live. When you listen to a stellar song on one of their albums, thinking "can this GET any better?", you will be blown away when you see or hear a recording of that song live, because U2 just explodes live. Their songs just take another dimension, you feel so connected, and sometimes they really just hit that transcendent place that rock and roll sometimes gets to, which makes you feel like anything is possible =)

ok, so basically try
1. best of 1980-1990
2. joshua tree
3. unforgettable fire is great too.
4. achtung baby
5. all that you can't leave behind/how to dismantle an atomic bomb
6. pop =)
7. best of 1990-2000 if you want

o, ps - they have a definitive "Best of" collection coming out called "U218 singles", so i highly suggest you buy it.
