There are products on the market that you're supposed to be able to use for both making whites brighter and maintaining color. However, I've found from experience that these just don't work. Anything that lightens whites will lighten colors as well. As far as natural remedies are concerned, here are a few tips: 1. Hard water causes dingy clothes. If you can't invest in a water softener or purifier try adding a little baking soda to the wash cycle. It has a natural softening effect. 2. Wash whites separately from other colors and under no circumstances wash whites with cleaning rags. The chemicals from the cleaning supplies will get into the fabric of your good clothing and distort them. 3. Use less soap. The recommended amount that companies like Tide or Cheer etc put on the box is about twice the amount of soap you need (imagine that. You have to buy it more often). Excess soap is difficult to rinse out and when left on clothing it makes the clothes very dingy. If you feel funny about cutting the soap in half you can still help to remove the excess soap by adding 1 cup white vinegar in the rinse water. 4. For all white "whites" you can hang them in the sun to brighten their color. 5. Soak clothes overnight before washing will help to remove all dirt and result in a cleaner, brighter load. 6. When all else fails, remember that it is always easier to keep clothes white and bright rather than try to restore brightness. Once an article of clothing has gone through the dryer, you're pretty much stuck with what comes out of it. You can brighten it by degrees but it will never be fully restored. Instead, go shopping (Yea!) get some bright whites and work on not letting them get dingy in the first place through using the tips above. Good luck!

I don't know whether you can still get it, but there used to a little blue cube you could buy at the supermarkets or ironmongers. It would sometimes give the shirt a bluey white colour, but after a couple of washes it would come up a brilliant white.

They have stuff at the supermarket which you can soak your garment in and it will take away the yellow dye.It might be called something like Dygone. look in the stain removal area near the wash powders. Good luck
PS. Some materials don't respond to bleach... in fact it can make some go even more cream coloured. I wouldn't use it again or it could rot the fibres.

Try Lingerie Whitener from any supermarket, bit expensive but works well and you should have enough to do some underwear as well.

Try white vinegar. Make sure you wash it separately or with other whites because it will bleach.
