My new fresh water tank contains 2 gouramies, 7 platies and 4 loaches plus an algae eater. Until now I have seen no problems between species. I wish to add 2 colourful discus to the tank. Will this cause any problems? Is it preferable to have 1 male and 1 female or rather 2 females to avoid any chasing around in the tank?

Discus require extremely pristine water and temperature conditions. Put them in a tank all their own.

Gouramis become aggressive and territorial as they grow. Better move them to a separate tank.

Platies and loaches should do well in a community tank. Just be sure they get sufficient open swimming space, enough plants and decorations for them to hide into, adequate air supply, nice water filtration, and moderate feeding.

discus are beautiful fish but not recommended for the beginner as they have very specific water quality and feeding requirements and are best kept in tanks with other discus only. I have heard of them being kept successfully in community tanks but this is not normally advised and should only be attempted in a large 55+gal well established tank. they also get quite large and need about 10 gallons of tank space per fish- thus 2 discus would require a 20 gal aquarium just for them- you didn't mention the size of your tank- a good site to go to to learn more is 'badmans tropical fish'

Discus are beautiful fish...but very difficult to keep...they tend to sulk and waste away if they are not completely happy...and who knows sometimes what keeps them that way....males have domination issues with other males...i don't know about females and male couples...but I'd really check this out further before you spend the money on the discus...cause I think they are also quite expensive.
