If you'd really like to know what goth is, go to goth.net and read the 'What is goth?' bit. Emo kids can have whatever length hair they want as far as I know. Also, Amy Lee is more Nu-Metal than anything else. If you'd like a list of postpunk or goth songs, I could e-mail you one.

Gothic (IMO) is a kind, an expression of style and character, somebody who exhibits attractiveness in darker issues. Emo's are emotional cutters who hate the international and everybody in it. so some distance as style the people who call who Emo are actually not properly versed on what the two are. Goths dress in black, sure even though this is deeper than that. i in my opinion evaluate myself a goth yet i don't positioned on black lipstick and that i don't positioned on all black. I positioned on corsets and proper black stoned rings, 1950's goth mom clothing (Rockabilly) Emo's positioned on black and have there hair putting in there face all day. Thats how I see it and have been knowledgeable on, i'm hoping this helped.

Generally speaking, I find Goths are an angry, cynical sadness, and Emos are a weepy, dramatic sadness. The varying degrees of both can blur this line, but the more Hardcore reaches of these sub-cultures are more easily defined.
Goth came first, and while you can have long hair and be Emo, your love of Hard Rock leans you more towards the gothic catagory.

THANK YOU dc87! He is totally right on that hun. I am gothic and I am not sad at all. I am actually happy, but I love the clothing and music and the whole shabang so I became one. Emo is emotional and they are generally sad little preppies who act punk. Punk is goths long lost cousin and sadly, emo is just sad preppie. So unless you are that, I'd say you're a closet goth. If you really want to be gothic, I suggest reading "What is Goth?" by Voltaire. Its available at any Hot Topic.

There's a big difference between goth and emo.
And by the way, goth music isn't hard rock, actual goth music came from punk and post-punk in the late '70s and early '80s.
Also you don't have to be sad to be goth. Actually most of the goths who are truly goth (well, old-school goths/trad goths anyway) aren't sad at all.

Gothic people were around before Emo, which has virtually become a bit more of a mainstream versions. Goths usually enjoy wearing black and looking different because it makes them look beautiful and that sort of stuff. Occcasionally they may be people who try to commit suicide. Emo's on the otherhand are virtually the ones who want to be Goth, but don't have the guts to go hard out....
Going into my social group... emo is virtually someone who cuts their wrists with razor blades and stuff for attention.

AFAIK
Emo is sad pathetic & whiney. Also self harming. Hence the "emo" as in emotional.
Goth is more into the Amy Lee, hard rock, Manson, Gothic rock type thing & where gothic clothing & have an interest in the occult & supernatural

sounds like your a bit of a scene queen to me. Justifying an interest in any genre of music is not done through the expression of fashion as opposed to the enjoyment of music. While music classifications are important to help clarify sonic interests I might suggest that in the name of art, music and the planet that you shy away from associating hair cuts, lipstick and cloth colours with social affiliations or "scenes". If young people continue to find "role models" in a monotonal environment of one or two genre's then they will continue to harbour racial and social seperation through which many will blame society instead of accpeting responsibility.
seriously....start listening to psy or chill music!!!

I have heard from various sources that 'emo' is short for 'emotion,' which Emos are allowed to feel. Goths tend to only feel despair, doom, and anger (not to mention intense hatred; not intended to offend any Goths or Emos).
