This sounds like your supply authority service head ( cut-out).
Look on your electricity invoice for an emergency number.
It's their responsibility but if it is found not to be their problem you may get charged for the call out.
EDF energy are the main suppliers now.
hope this helps.

The box (With the meter) is sealed by your electric company and there should be a sticker on it saying that it belongs to them.
You should take a look at your electric bill and there should be a contact number there. Call them and report the problem. If you think there is a danger to yourself caused by this problem, then do it straight away. They should fix it for free.
Only the electric company can touch it - not you or an independent electrician.

'Main electric box' but not your fuse box?? The only other thing you should have is - from the outside- Supply cable, main fuses/cutouts, Meter, (Possibly main isolator?) then your fusebox/consumer unit. What's the problem? You have to contact your electricity supply company, Look in phone book under electricity or similar, or look on your bill, for a faults number.

The first place the electrics got to when they come into the house is the meter. The meter is sealed with a security tag.Everything from the meter back is the suppliers responsibility.Everything else is down to the house owner. If it is a supply problem there should be a telephone number on your bill that you can phone about the problem.

It may or may not be illegal. What it is, however, is potentially dangerous. If your waste-pipe should spring a leak, how close might the water be to the fuse-box? Most people would be interested in you paying your bills, but probably not too many in your personal safety! I would ask the landlord, in writing and keeping a copy, to move the meter to a safer place.

The company who you pay your bill to and the one that physically supplies your electric can be different.
In Cornwall, Western Power provides the infrastracture and you take you choice who bills you.
