In folk dancing (whichever style) one looks at the music source (whether band, or cd/radio etc) and couples face the music to see who is on right and who is on left. Men stand on the left and women on the right. Long formation is when many couples line up one behind the other, down the length of the room. The couples may face each other, or be beside each other. Keep dancing.

I do folk dance too. I haven't heard of long formation but I've heard of long-way sets formation which means that women are on one side in a line standing next to each other and the men are on the opposite side facing the women. This is usually done in contra dancing either American or English. You can read more about it here:
