I'm terrified of public speaking, I want to avoid it as much as possible. Could I get a BS in Connecticuit without having to take that class?

It depends on your college, definitely. Some schools require it, others don't. Most schools will give you at least a few options to choose from--for example, you could take the "Public Speaking" class, or you might have the option to take a speaking-intensive class in a subject you enjoy instead. Look at the course requirements of the schools you're interested in.

And by the way, course requirements aren't set out by state, they're set out by the individual school.

No matter what you end up doing after you finish school, the ability to present yourself and your ideas powerfully has never been more important than in today’s dynamic information age. Speaking well can influence other’s views, get you a great job, close a deal, motivate others, enhance your business and social life as well as elevate your reputation.

Many people get jitters speaking in public. Lilly Walters author of “Secrets of Successful Speakers” says 75% of stage fright can be reduced by rehearsal and preparation, 15% by deep breathing, and 10% by mental preparation. Thorough preparation alleviates anxiety and ultimately provides a consistent structure for achieving extraordinary results.

I have been speaking and performing in public for more than 40 years now. Believe me, this is a skill that is worth developing and you will reap dividends over and over again in your adult life from investing time now to grow in this area. Like any subject, public speaking can be learned, mastered and even enjoyed.

Simply search "fear of public speaking" or "the art of public speaking" or "public speaking" and you'll find an abundance of free resources to help you on the internet.

Honestly, the biggest step in overcoming your fear of public speaking is merely to be willing to "take it on" as the next step to improve yourself. Historically the world's greatest leaders have all been extraordinary communicators. And many of them had to push through their fear and continue to do so to make a difference in the world.

Study with a good coach, take an acting class or join an organization like Toastmasters. Get into an environment that supports your full self expression. Learn a system that will help you to plan, prepare, practice and present confidently. This will dissipate your fears one step at a time.

The path to mastery is practice. Confucius said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Enjoy the journey.
