Best way would be to use to restore CD (if you have it) for your computer. That basically whipes off everything and takes it back to how it came out of the box.
You could also trying cleaning out the computer (cookies, temp files, etc) by doing a simple START --> PROGRAMS --> ACCESSORIES --> SYSTEM TOOLS --> DISK CLEANUP, if you dont have the cds.
You can also contact the manufacturer giving them your make and model computer and they will send you the restore CD for a relatively modest price -- @35 bucks.
Now, if you have your own version of windows without a restore CD, then you simply format the drive, and reinstall the entire operating system.
TIP -- If youve updated your drivers, or installed hardware you will save yourself alot of time by getting a program that backs up your drivers, so that you dont have to reinstall the drivers once you reinstall the operating system. Theres alot of shareware programs that backup drivers. You can use it once and that will save lots of time.
If you have win XP then
You could also do a Windows System Restore, START --> PROGRAMS --> ACCESSORIES --> System restore and go back to the very first date thats bolded on the calendar. Which will return your system settings back to the way they were on whatever date you had them.
This with your system clean up should do you just fine.
Hope it helps

The MFT is buggered up, prolly needs a good cleaning also, backup any importantg files, or stuff that you think is important, then get in a command prtompt and type /erase C:. Your computer will not work anymore.
Partition the Hard drive while reformatting it, then install the OS that you own or have been given Legal Access to.
You cant own Windows OS, cause Microsoft owns it, aint that a hoot. You buy the OS, you get an OS Disk, take it home and go to install it and up comes the EULA, you may USE this OS but you cannot alter it. Apple is the same way. Renting OSs is what we are doing now. Just they sell em for $229 at the store and say its yours, but it aint like a car, it is THIERS. you are just useing it. You are a user.

what i would do is save all the important things on a differant harddrive. and then after that reinstall your xp system. and run your manufactors c.d with it. the c.d that came with the comp. if your cant do this bring it to best buy or ask a friend. there is a c.d that i have that takes all the things out in a operating sysytem that u dont need. u cant go through the c.d and pick what u want. your best bet save all your impornt stuff on a differant harddrive and reload your harddrive.
hope i made sense lol

Start uninstalling programs you never use. There are many programs that eat up a lot of memory. Delete the ones you never use, but don't delete any program that supports any anti-virus program. Your computer will crash. After you have deleted some of them, use the "defragment" command to rearrange your remaining files. Go to "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", then "System Tools". You wil be able to find "Disk Defragmenter". After defragmenting, your computer will operate twice as fast than before. You can repeat it again to make the computer operate faster, but there is no more need.
