Msg makes me feel thristy and for the first spoonful or bite of the food, I can tell whether they put msg in the food and I usually drink only water or tea with food. When I know they put msg in my food, I would order soft drinks like Coke or Fanta, the soft drinks would make my tongue not so sensitive to msg. (I do not drink beer but my friends told me that beer helps too)
And after I have had msg food, the thrist would bother me whole night long!
If you usually having beer or soft drinks with your food, you may not be able to know it.

Ask the server to ask the cook(s), or the manager. Read the menu and see if it advertises or mentions no MSG, call ahead. Go on their website.

You need to ask if they use MSG and there is a site on the internet that has a list of foods to avoid. www.msgmyth.com is one site and there are plenty more
