WWE has consistantly sabotaged it's cruiserweight division from the very beginning in 1997.
Before I go any further, I want to make it clear that this is in no way the fault of the performers. James Gibson (Jamie Noble) and Little Guido are two of the best cruiserweight wrestlers of this generation, and the roster is stocked full of many of the top cruiserweights in the US.
The problem is twofold:
1. The WWF/E buries the cruiserweights and the cruiserweight division. Very rarely does a cruiserweight title match make a ppv, and when it does, it's almost always a gimmick match, such as a battle royale, gauntlet or fatal four way. Feuds almost never develop over the title, and storylines are nonexistant. Matches between two cruiserweights that are not title matches very, very rarely happen, so it's hard to take it seriously.
2. Any cruiserweight who makes any connection to the fans is taken out of the cruiserweight division and placed in the hunt for either the tag team, IC/US or heavyweight title. Rey Mysterio winnin the Heavyweight Title is a classic example of this, as Mysterio simply does not qualify for a Heavyweight belt at his weight, but is still pushed as a heavyweight, which is just plain ridiculous. Rather than to use his popularity to boost the struggling cruiserweight division, they push him to midcard and main event status for other belts. This has been consistant with new performers who come into the company and completely bypass the cruiserweight division, such as Simon Dean, who at no point in his career grew to a weight beyond the cruiserweight division.
Combine the above two with the fact that the WWE brass simply doesn't allow cruiserweights to perform up to their level, for the fear that they will outshine larger, slower, less talented performers such as John Cena and The Undertaker, and you'll see why the WWE Cruiserweight Division will never get off the ground, and will never be able to compete with the TNA X Division, or Ring Of Honor pro wrestling.
Remember...the folks in charge of WWE are not concerned with quality. They are concerned with marketing. They are all style, no substance. They want to make money from casual viewers who like flashy lights and cartoony characters. They haven't been in the "wrestling" business for years, in favor of maintaining a B-List "entertainment" business. The result is that World Wrestling Entertainment is neither wrestling nor entertainment, and the company as a whole has become a joke, and a shell of it's former self.

WWE's cruiserweight division is more or less non-existant now. Helms could go for a US title run...well he can't beat Benoit, maybe after Benoit loses the US title. There are not a lot of cruiserweights left. The X-division is far better anyway.
Rey Mesterio has been wrestling on bad knees for the last few months. Vince was never a big cruiserweight fan anyway. It has nothing to do with McMahon holding the moves back. He would like to have those moves, the ECW has the crazy stuff, although it is not as extreme as before.

I did have a tremendous amount of respect for the Cruiserweight Championship; I've always said the Cruiserweights are some of the best athletes in WWE history. I'm not surprised at all that WWE gave the title to Hornswoggle, as the Cruiserweight Championship is always abused and put down in WWE. Plus, WWE is desperately trying to bring comedy to their programming, and they think this could help.

There's still the cruiserweight division on Smackdown!?!?....I thought it died of when Helms won the belt!
Well anyways, to me, the X Division Championship is probrobly the best title that appears on American television today. It's one of the only kinds of matches that catches my full attention. And no, it is not filled with spots, it's exciting in other ways...those high risk moves are just an added bonus for us viewers. Yeah, yeah, i know about the history of the other belts, but the matches the stars of the X Division put up, is the kind you will watch until the very end....it's that damn good.
TNA has so many talented wrestlers in the back, they're begging to get a 2 hour time-slot to show the worldm great wrestlers the casual fan don't know about.
The Cruiserweight division is dead....D-E-A-D!!!

you have a point... WWE's cruiserweight division was greatly toned down compared to before. Kidman, London, Ultimo Dragon, and Rey Mysterio really made the fans chant "Holy Sh--" consistently. i don't know why most of them have been released (or they probably resigned). but even with TNA's line-up of talented superstars, i still prefer to watch WWE mainly because i still find WWE more entertaining as a whole. TNA's a mere shadow of the old WCW. i hate to admit it, but WCW was a hit thanks to Bischoff. if Bischoff were to go to TNA, he would probably turn the tables on WWE once again and cause a stir on the ratings.

the x division is the best thing on TNA but you can't compare it to the cruiserweight division cos the x division is more of a upper mid card attraction. Not to mention the big Samoa Joe was once champ!

I feel tat WWE is not appreciating what the cruiserweights can do... they are only focusing on the heavyweights... Talents like Nunzio are getting limited time on TV becoz he wasn't big enuff... Rey was an exception maybe becoz they are trying to make use of him as he is Eddie's good fren in real life (R.I.P Eddie, thanks for everything) So many cruiserweights were overlooked and i really think WWE should make the cruiserweight title a "open" title so cruiserweights from ECW and RAW can compete for it and thus making it more interesting...

WWE's cruiserweight divison can't compare with the X-divison because WWE concentrates more on heavyweights.WWE's heavyweight division is far more better than TNA's heavyweight division.Heavyweights are far more popular than cruiserweights, that's why WWE doesn't look up on cruiserweights.
