See Raj its a idivisuals choice always , If you ask me i belong to a marwari family our community is 99% literate, we are business leaders in all sector like Videocon, Birla, Bajaj, Kinetic, Ambanis(Gujrati),etc, The main reason of their progress is their family tree and the joint family they had.Now its open market ,you hire managers but still your group progresse only if u have that family feeling. So a joint family only dont mean staying in one house it means you are united and you work together for one goal.

Definitely i'm on the side of joint family. Its a place filled with love. But this is only possible if each and every member of the family needs to be in a joint family. Everything depends on the individuals mentality. There should be lots of adjustments, care, and love for eachother.
kids grow well definitely in a joint family system. Lonliness will never affect them, lonliness is the most dangerous thing that affects the character of a kid. When parents are busy in earning money having no time to take care of their kids , its the grandfather or grandmother or their uncle or aunt who takes care of your kids.
Though there may be a loss of freedom, a restricted freedom is more tastier than a total freedom.

You do not choose a joint family or a nuclear family. It is by tradition. Now, the joint family system, in India, on the way out and with the individuals leaving the family for the sake careers and the women folks getting job, the nuclear families are the order of the day.

I agree with Vivek_R to the extent that it's left to the perception of each individual.
Plusses:
- Security (Emotional / Financial / Social)
- Fun! (The more the merrier!)
- Values and Morals will remain etched in the family in the presence of elders
- Children can be taken care of well, as there will always be someone at home
Minuses:
- Privacy (Yes, you will need it at times; you might want to spend some quiet moments with your newly-married wife; but you may not be lucky always in even talking to her alone!)
- Chances of small issues being blown up beyond proportions (Say, you have a fight with your wife; obviously your people will take sides with you and make your wife feel lonely. Eventually what could have been a small quarrel between you and your wife becomes a big issue!)
- Embarrassment due to differences in economic status (Lets assume you and your brothers live as a joint family. Assuming you all work at different places, if you earn much more than them, they might feel bad thinking of their level. If you earn less than them, you yourself will feel bad when you find their children dressing up well when you can just afford one new dress per year for your children! Am stating this example at a lower level. But it can be compared at all levels. Say, their children have an iPod player, while you are unable to get one for your kid. Their children have camera phones, while your children have to be satisfied with a basic model phone which considers SMS itself as an extra feature!)
So it's up to you eventually to balance these and choose!
If you feel you can overcome these negatives, u can go ahead to live as a joint family!
But if you feel these problems are very much possible, then better stay away. Atleast relationships will be proper then!
