Some places DO keep them and you can claim it after the game. (Knoxville IceBears do this) / Most do not.
Some give the hats to charities. Some give them to the employees. The rest get thrown out.

The correct answer is "yes." That is, if you attend one of the handful of arenas that just scoops them up into a huge bin and lets you reclaim your (or someone else's) hat after the game. Two of my close friends work at the American Airlines Center in Dallas where the Stars play and they do this every time someone scores a hat trick. I also know that several other arenas do it, but it is entirely up to the rink management whether they give you a chance to get your hat back or not.
In any event, you throw your hat on the ice after a hat-trick because it's usually pretty rare to see one in person. You can always buy another hat.

Some places will throw them into a bin and you can dig through looking for yours. Other places dont. Most of the time if you do get a hat back, its not yours.

No. The Flyers have a display case at the Center full of hats tossed on the ice, but not for reclaiming - just for display.

No. They walk around with a big broom and sweep up all the hats together.

No, always take an old, unwanted hat, if you intend to throw it on the ice at such an occasion.

depends. I know at Mellon they do. But you have to really want your hat back. They have this huge bin that they just toss out on the ice and let people go through. (or at least they used too.)
