0- ticks don't have fleas

not a smart a*s answer either, just logical thinking

Number of animals (assuming ticks and fleas are not considered animals, since otherwise there would be no answer) is 7 + 7^2 + 7^3 + 7^3 + 17 * 7^3 + 17 * 7^4 = 47390

Number of fleas is therefore 7 * 6 * 47390 = 1990380

Now, how 7 fleas can fit on a tick is beyond me.

Assuming ticks have fleas and snakes have ticks ( imposible cause they dont have fur )

fleas =6*7(fleas/animal) *(7monkeys+7^2snakes+7^3kangaroo+7^3deer+17*(7^3) rabits +17* (7^4)birds)

= 42*(7+49 + 343 + 5831 + 40817 )

=42 * 47047 = 1975974

7 monkeys x 6 x 7 = 294
7 monkeys x 7= 49 snakes x 7 x 7 = 2401
49 snakes x 7 = 343 kangaroos x 6 x 7= 14406
343 deer x 6 x 7= 14406
343 deer x 17= 5831 rabbits x 6 x 7= 244902
5831 rabbits x 7= 40817 birds x 6 x 7= 1714314
294+2401+14406+14406+244902+1714314=

1990723 fleas

Well, let's see...

7 monkeys
7x7=49 snakes
7x49=343 kangaroos & 343 deer
17x343=5831 rabbits
7x5831=40817 birds

40817+5831+343+343+49+7=47390 animals
6x47390=284340 ticks
7x284340=1990380 fleas

Whether or not ticks can have fleas (plus, you didn't specify how they "had" the fleas... the fleas could just be their friends) isn't the question. You've stated in the question that the ticks had fleas, given that, this is the answer.

There are an infinite number of fleas.

Because fleas and tick are also animals, if each animal has 6 ticks, then every tick has 6 ticks and 42 fleas, and every one of them has 6 ticks and 42 fleas and so on and so on until infinity

There are 1,990,380 fleas

Here's my breakdown:
monkeys - 7
snakes - 49
kangaroos - 343
deer - 343
rabbits - 5831
birds - 40817
total animals - 47390
ticks - 284340

fleas - 1990380

Judging by the various responses, I wonder how many thinkers were just plain old "high."
