Here's my story. I am an accountant by profession (something I tolerate), but I feel as if my days at work are hours that I am losing...why? Because I feel as if I have so MUCH more to me than a tax-return preparer. I've always had talent in many creative things, such as cartooning, directing, and acting. BUT, I went into accounting because I was fearful of going poor with one of the more creative fields. I work all day long...tax is a busy field...but, I feel as if it's all wasted time and talent. SURE, the pay is nice, but, what's money to me? Compensation for my WASTED time/efforts, etc. Any advice/suggestions for me? MY God-given talents are out the door, my days are nothing special, and my inner talent and creativity is ignored. All comments are welcome, and God bless.

That's really sad!

Life is too short to waste your time, a job is just a job. but your life....well let's not waste it. I would say follow your dreams! make your life exciting for yourself, after all it is YOUR life and you are the boss. Go for a change. If you don't try it, you may always wonder what would have happened! Have faith in yourself, you already know that you want to do it. you will always have your accounting to fall back on if it doesn't work out. So you have nothing to lose!

Go for it!
Good Luck!!

I'm not sure if this will help, but maybe it will get some ideas flowing. I have a friend who is a music teacher. While he doesn't necessarily hate his job, he has other interests than music. He has a witty personality and can draw. So in his free time he began to draw cartoons every week for a local college newspaper. That eventually branched out into his own little line of greeting cards that local stores sell. Maybe you can begin with something small that you can do in your free time. . . and then let that branch out into something bigger.

I'm not sure if you're working as a tax preparer for a company or independently, but it is probably best to keep your job (and income coming in) just for now. You might need it later if you're into arts/performing, trust me! In most communities there are usually lots of things you can get involved in at little or no cost. For example, there are community music ensembles, acting groups, and sometimes art classes you can take. Since people who are involved in these things have other professions, they often meet after business hours. Once you have a clearer vision on what talents you want to develop, you could save your money to go back and get a second degree (which is much more common these days).

I hope this helps!!! Good luck on all your endeavors!

Accountant here as well, but I'm on the other side (auditor). Funny thing is, and other ppl correct me if I'm wrong, but I've known alot of people that have changed jobs and careers a few years after college. Seems to me that it's part of the "search" of life in looking for what you love to do. Myself, I started out as a biologist in a small company in Sacramento, but working long hours each day with garlic plants in a sterile environment wasn't what I was expecting and after that I did stints as an EMT, Restauranteur, and finally ended up in Accounting - which I've grown to love. I even went back to School to get an accounting degree. I guess the moral if there is one is that one quote from Baz Luhrman - the race is long, but in the end it's only with yourself.

DOn't be afraid to take a chance and try something new! Tax season is coming up too, so maybe now is the time? Or maybe work like a dog until 4/15 and save up some money and then take a leap?

Good night and good luck!

have you looked at doing something creative part time? and cutting back on your hours as an accountant? Have you thought about quitting your job and looking into a carreer as a animation artist? I would suggest you take a night course or something along those lines to see how much talent you have and then if you find you have talent, quit your job (make sure you have enough to live on first!) and go for it!

Life is too short to keep doing something that makes you miserable.
Start cutting down on your workload (however possible) and start spreading your wings a bit creatively part time, until you find your niche, or at least some contentment in your life . . . good luck!
