The NFL has contracts with various networks to televise its games which ensures that ALL teams will make a profit for the year as each team shares equally. The live gate is gravy. Also, the players are not paid during the preseason but the the teams charge regular prices for the games so that money is pure profit. The teams also contract with companies which provide the concessions which are at a flat fee so that the team always makes money from that while the parties which provide food, etc. have to depend on good business at the games to make a profit. There is a salary cap in the NFL but the teams are not obligated to pay the maximum to their players. Therefore, some of the teams remain bad year after year while still making a profit.
