Should they have more sovereignty in their own affairs or does the Federal government reign supreme on the issue of sovereignty in your opinion? I understand the constitutional aspects of this issue, but which would you prefer?

The States should definitely have more say in their own affairs. For the most part, they do, but the Feds always threaten to cut funding to the States that don't pass certain legislation. One recent example being the speed limit in Montana. Until this year, there was no speed limit in that State, but they caved in to the Feds to hold on to funding.

The Federal government should only exist to protect its citizens, act as our representative to the rest of the world, and help maintain national infrastructure. Everything else should be left to each State to provide.

The support of the State governments in all their rights, as the most competent administrations for our domestic concerns and the surest bulwarks against antirepublican tendencies.

These principles form the bright constellation which has gone before us and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. The wisdom of our sages and blood of our heroes have been devoted to their attainment. They should be the creed of our political faith, the text of civic instruction, the touchstone by which to try the services of those we trust; and should we wander from them in moments of error or of alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety.

The feds should be the bodyguards of the states. States run their affairs while the feds make sure they stay safe.
