Here's my story. I am an accountant by profession (something I tolerate), but I feel as if my days at work are hours that I am losing...why? Because I feel as if I have so MUCH more to me than a tax-return preparer. I've always had talent in many creative things, such as cartooning, directing, and acting. BUT, I went into accounting because I was fearful of going poor with one of the more creative fields. I work all day long...tax is a busy field...but, I feel as if it's all wasted time and talent. SURE, the pay is nice, but, what's money to me? Compensation for my WASTED time/efforts, etc. Any advice/suggestions for me? MY God-given talents are out the door, my days are nothing special, and my inner talent and creativity is ignored. All comments are welcome, and God bless.

What might be fun is to get involved with a local theater group. Many get together and practice after work. They usually don't have much money for their productions so they would use as many of your creative talents as you volunteer. Check it out, have some fun, and see which specific talent makes you happiest, then pursue that.
This way you don't have to be poor while you figure out which direction you should go.

On a job I sat at a computer from 7:00 a.m to sometimes 11:30 p.m. with short coffee breaks and eating delivered Chinese food (delivered by an out of work actor) creating graphics for a client that called me all kinds of four letter words and would change her ideas 20 times till she came back to the original idea.
I made a graphic for a friends album and gave him a copy. 4 months later they have lost their copy and want to physically fight me if I can't find the original. It was done more as a favor so the fee was nominal.
For a long period of time, there was no graphic work and I basically starved and couldn't pay bills once my savings ran out. The graphic file I've been working on for several hours in now corrupt and the moment I had captured and that was going so well is now lost. I have to start all over and the client has called me 5x this morning waiting for something, anything.
One time my brain shut down and I could not produce one image that looked any better than someone just learning graphics. Another clients son has a "graphic program" and has made something the client wants me to fix for him for a small layout.
It looks like crap and can't be fixed but I have to take the idea and not change it too much yet enough so it can be used. Houdini? (an inside joke)
The grass is always greener on the other side. I love numbers. Loved math and its orderliness. Always wanted to do something on the numbers side. That's the truth.

Well, the first thing to realize is that you are not alone!!! You obviously have the desire to change your life and here in America it is one thing we all are allowed to pursue without government intervention so I say "Go For It"!!! You didn't mention whether or not you had a family to consider or large monthly financial obligations but those things are not obstacles - just issues to consider when deciding when and how to go about "writing" the next chapter of your life. You obviously have access to Internet - surf your little heart out - there are literally tons of resource sites. You don't have to turn in your letter of resignation to your present employer. Work on your "dream job" part time (again, the Internet is a great resource) create a website (or learn to design websites for others!) detailing your talents, ideas, portfolios, etc - shoot, you can create as many as you like (or can handle!!!). See which one takes off (maybe all of them!). As your clients increase (this = $$) you will be able to assess when it is right for you to turn in that resignation letter (better just go ahead and type it now and keep it updated - you never can tell!!!). There has to be more to life than "dragging" yourself to work everyday - besides if you are truly happy and satisfied with your accomplishments - trust me - everyone around you will be happier also. Good luck and please do not get discouraged - Rome wasn't built in a day

You know, we all have to make decisions about our lives which are determined by the circumstances we are in. Who can foresee the future? No one. So your life is no different than most peoples.
We get one chance at life that we know of. We have certain obligations that we choose to take on. Those obligations shape our lives (like if you have kids, buy a home and have a mortgage, etc.)
So do you have kids? Do you have obligations that you must meet? If you do, then you should continue to meet those.
If you have no obligations then determine what you are willing to give up in order to work on your creative side. No one but you can make this decision because we do not understand or know your circumstances. Sometimes going with your heart is th right decision...and sometimes it is not.
Could you take a leave of absense from your work and give your dreams a try?

Keep day job but pratice your creative tallents at night, host toons on a web page. I don't say keep the day job to be mean but it is a good job to keep food in the fridge and a roof over your head. Just because you do that during the day does not mean you can't start somthing more in your free time. If the somthing more can keep the room over your head and a bit of food in the fridge then totally go for it, but test it first, part time.

I personally think that having a job working 17 hours a day to buy things like a nice house you get to be in 5 hours a day and a car you get to drive 2 hours a day and doing nothing but working a COMPLETE WASTE OF YOUR LIFE. What is money if you can't enjoy it?

sounds to me you are not happy working in this field, yes it pays the bills and you need this job right now...on your time off, why not check out some of the things you like and enjoy, and convert your talents into a career for you. you will be challenged and inspired doing something you love..[ i would work your happy job on a part time basis until it can replace your living expenses that you earn at the job you have now..one should work at what makes them happy. study this and get happy..you deserve it.....

Your's is a typical case of doing something that you do not enjoy much. You do it for financial security reason.Well depending on the number of years of your experience try out a 4days a week job and the other days you get to do what you love to do with your talents that is.This way you get to eat the cake and have it too.Which means you have to settle with lesser money but get to put your talent to use.All the best.Atleast I do it that way and I am very content with life!!!!

I got a similar problem - my head is for my health care career and my heart wants the music career so.....I do both. It can be done except during tax season for you but that doesnt last that long.
On the other hand, we all know about those artists who end up starving while waiting for their big breaks. We are luckier in that respect....why starve?

Act, you have to act on it, dreaming is a waste of time and your spirit is saying to you " Wake up " We are put on this earth to create, this is our only purpose, what we are intended to be.
You will only think more and more on this as it slowly eats at you , sure you are in a comfort zone, and is there a risk if you believe in yourself.?? That's part of learning who you are, don't have any fear, what are you waiting for ,?? have faith in your creative process, for that is it's the process.
