In most cases, you must have at least a four year college degree. Criminal justice, psychology, and sociology are some common majors for probation officers. Some employers require applicants to have an advanced degree in criminal justice, social work, psychology, or a related field. As is true for many law enforcement officer jobs, different employers have different requirements. Previous work related experience can certainly you get hired. You could consider trying to become a correctional officer to gain some experience. Do whatever you can to make yourself the best candidate that you can. Don't do anything illegal, maintain a good reputation, keep a good driving record, don't get bad credit, improve all of your communication skills as much as possible, and become as physically fit as you can. Consider county, state, and federal jobs.

Requirements vary from State to State. Usually prefer law enforcement education or experience. Best thing to do would be to call your local Department of Corrections and ask them for a job description for a Probation/Parole Officer. They would be able to steer you in the right direction

Usually a criminal justice degree is most helpful. Check with your state's department of employment for requirements, then check which schools offer you the most bang for your tuition buck. Don't forget that a second language may enhance your chances. Good luck.
