The "spread by the sword" argument is out of date and is a quick answer with no real depth. Furthermore, it doesn't answer the question. If you're looking for contemporary views of Christianity in Turkey and want 'first hand' accounts I suggest doing a simple search for forums based in Turkey that talk about religion. Take these with a grain of salt however, because they are obviously not accurately representative of the population as a whole. Another method you can take is to browse current newspapers in Turkey that are available online and search for headings that relate to Christianity or Christian events. That's a starting point, but if you're looking for in depth research you may want to look beyond this. Hope your homework goes well!

Before the Ottoman Empire ruled Turkey, the Country of Turkey was Christian. In the Bible the city of Ephesus which is in Turkey followed Christianity for at least 150 years. Somewhere in the 1500's or a little bit earlier during the Crusades Muslims took over Turkey, parts of Africa and Spain. The peoples in these countries were forced to convert to Islam or die by the sword.

Turkey's present government is secular. In fact, no one working in the government can wear a burka or other religous clothing. A woman cannot attend universities wearing Muslim clothing. Christianity is accepted as well as any other religion. I am not sure, however, if there is freedom to spread the religion.
