Are you talking film or stage? The stage is kinder, age-wise; there are fewer parts for women on film as they age.
However, I wouldn't agree with what your friend said. Lightning can strike at any time. Just keep working at your craft. And break a leg.

If you are looking for ingenou roles, then there is some truth to that. However most charecter actors careers do not really take off until they are getting a little older.
Also think of all the young women who get discouraged in thier twenties and quit by thirty. There is now a lot more chance for you as you have less competition.
Hang in there, keep working, learning and growing. It will all work out somehow.

It is harder for females in the acting profession at all times, but after 30 it's even harder. Maybe when they get to 50 there might be a role or two, but women are considered to be unimportant unless they are pretty (at least!) and even then are supposed to be fashion accessories for males.(Maybe if you're in the UK you might stand more of a chance, though I'm told that they are very Americanised now). Sadly, most men are not into having real relationships at any meaningful level with women. It's difficult for them because they've been brainwashed into believing that women are inferior. Poor things!

It completely depends on you. I'd agree that in tv/film, youth is your biggest asset, and it can become really tough to get the big jobs if you haven't already established yourself. But that still doesn't rule out smaller roles, commercials, etc.
In theatre, it's a different story. There are better and more roles for older women, for one thing, and an older woman can "play young" longer onstage than on camera.
But I think mostly it depends on who you are, what kind of work you're looking for, etc. I know that my career didn't really begin to take off until I had passed 30. In my twenties I really struggled.

Hi,
Yeah its hard for females to get glamour roles after they cross 30.
Nobody wants to c a woman more than 30 yrs and playing a role of a college girl.
so it true.
Cheers,

I think it's harder if the 30+ year old is still auditioning for the ingenue role. If you know who you are, and the characters you're suited for, you can still get roles.

i think it is because the female have the responsibility to give birth to children when they are 30 or so. And this is likely to be bad for a company, which has to provide, then, the special salary and vacation.
However, i am sure when the famale are excellent enough, they will, they can get very far even they are over 30.
