The Battle of Vicksburg or Siege of Vicksburg was the final significant battle in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. This was the culmination of one of the most brilliant military campaigns of the war. With the loss of Pemberton’s army and this vital stronghold on the Mississippi, the Confederacy was effectively split in half. Grant's successes in the West boosted his reputation, leading ultimately to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies.

It was the deciding battle of the Civil War. But allow me to digress, having stood on the battle field not long ago while listening to detailed accounts by an expert. I left very saddened by the stupid sacrifice of thousands of young lives in just one day for an issue that should have been solved peacefully.
