I've only heard short pieces of Arabic music, and also there was guest singer on that song "Desert Rose" by Sting. I think the guest singer's name is Cheb Mambi. I don't know how popular he is, or who else is popular in Arabic music. What little I've heard sounds neat.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan from Pakistan.
Ali Khan was a Sufi vocalist of Qawali music. His family sang these songs for 600 years.
Good first album: Musst Musst. Great percussion. Awesome stuff. Ta Deem is a favorite. Peter Gabriel produced and modernized some of his recordings.
Also, Camille Zamora is a soprano from Turkey. I don't know enough about her yet, we were supposed to see her in NYC at the Turkish Embassy a couple of weeks ago. Check Amazon for more information.

Error: Whoops. You're right, sayitlikeitis. Urdu = Hindi. Khan's vocalizations were very mystical. I was thinking Pashtun for some reason. I'm wrong, but I love Khan!
Here's more from Wikipedia:
UrdÅ« (اÙردÙ) is an Indo-European language of the Indo-Aryan family that developed under Persian, Turkish, Pashto, Arabic, Hindi, and Sanskrit influence in South Asia during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire (1200–1800).
Taken by itself, Urdū is approximately the twentieth most populous natively spoken language in the world, and is the national language of Pakistan as well as one of the 23 national languages of India.
