My hamsters keep eating each other and I do not know what to do. There was a mom, dad, 6 babies and an albino baby. Dad got eaten, 1 baby got eaten, the albino got eaten, and there is one baby, half eaten. He is still alive and running around but you can see some of his insides, by his neck. is there any way I can help him? or the othrers?

they are DWARF HAMSTERS and I still don't know how to help the half eaten baby. from his neck if you look down you can see some bone and some sort of red organ.

Good news, the baby lasted the night!! Ok,, maybe he is not half eaten but he does have a VERY deep , cut you could say. it looks like the othes started eating him but I rescued him before they killed him. P.S. THE DAD WAS KILLED FIRST!!!

You're supposed to separate the babies from the father (he will eat them), and the babies themselves by gender (they'll multiply). Didn't you educate yourself about hamsters before you bought them?

The *Dad* got eaten?! As in eaten up? or as in the Mom just bit him and he died?

The others are right, *always* separate the dad from the babies. Usually it's a good idea not to breed hamsters in the first place since you usually end up stuck with tons of babies that no one wants!

Occasionally a female may eat her own babies. This is not common and there is usually a reason for this behaviour. The most common reason is the breeding of a very young female (under 4 months of age). The female is quite simply too immature to cope with rearing a litter and destroys the babies. This often happens with females that are pregnant when bought from a pet shop and only 5-10 weeks of age. Therefore it is always best to buy a female from a shop that has the males and females in separate cages as to buy a young pregnant female can be particularly distressing for young owners who find that their hamster gives birth and then proceeds to destroy the litter.

Other reasons which may cause a female to destroy her own litter are ill health of the babies (she will destroy sickly babies rather than waste effort trying to raise them), extremely large litter (she may reduce the litter size and only rear the number she feels she can cope with), disturbance (she may feel threatened by something nearby), poor condition or health of the female and interference (touching the babies and changing their scent may lead her to believe the babies are not her own but intruders to be killed).

If a female is destroying her litter it is best to leave her alone to settle and try not to disturb her too much. Feeding high protein foods such as cheese, scrambled egg, etc may help her to cope with rearing the litter. If she continues to destroy the litter fostering (see below) may have to be considered if possible.

I think you will find the link below with quite a lot of information you need. Lots of luck. LL.

This is probably a gimme, but just in case.....
You ARE feeding them, right???
THe person that said to put them in a sturdy cardboard box...ummm No. They will chew right through that.
The person that asked if you educated yourself before purchasing them had a good point. Did you???
And finally, stop letting them breed for crying out loud! Do you know how many of those little suckers are bonked in the head by breeders because they dont get sold at the pet stores? Learn!

Poor things. NEVER leave the father with the babies and mama. I dont think theres any hope for the baby thats half eaten. I hate to say that but with it being so small chances are slim.

Put them in separate cages right away! Even if you have a sturdy box that will do for the time being. A similar thing happened to me once: I had a pregnant Chinese Hamster and when her babies were born she killed and ate all but one. If any have serious injuries take them to the vet immediately, they'll know how to handle it.

You don't keep them together like that. The father should be removed as soon as possible(except in the case of dwarf hamsters). If the babies are weaned, then they can be safely separated. Chances are, it's too crowded in there and they're eating each other because they're stressed.

That is so sad! I think you should put the baby out of its misery. It may be hard to do but I would just kill it as humanely as possible, that's just me. I wouldn't want to be running around half-eaten.
