Well, in our society breasts are seen as decorative, fun, sex-only objects and it is hard for a lot of people to overcome that and accept breasts for their primary biological purpose, which is to feed human offspring.

Also a lot of women have deep, perhaps subconscious, guilt about denying their babies the food they were meant to have for whatever reason. When People feel ashamed about a choice they've made they often lash out in defense against those who made different choices.

i am not offended by people nursing, even 3 year-old. In fact, my DD nursed until she was 40 months and is now an independent, self-assured incredibly smart 10 y.o. We should not stop nurturing our children just because they are old enough to verbalize their needs. We don't stop hugging them when they start saying "mama, i need a hug" do we?

Why are people in general offended by it? I never realised their was such an issue with it until I started nursing my daughter, than all sorts of hidden phobias came out of the closet. My sister confided she couldnt imagine breastfeeding such a huge baby, one that could just mosie (sp?) up to you... uh, my girl was 3mths old at the time. She couldnt even roll over to me, let alone mosie on up. My dad asked when I was planning to stop nursing my 9mth old, when she was 1, 2, 10 yrs old. Classy, Dad, really appreciated that.
I've asked a few ?'s to try and get at the bottom of all this uneasiness, but there really are no answers that make sense. It's all some sort of brainwashed, ingrained nonsense.

I don't know, but some are. My mom is for one. When she had me, doctors recommended that she give me formula and put down breastfeeding. So, I guess old habits die hard. When I decided to breastfeed, she seemed reluctantly accepting because she knew the times had changed. However, she still was very squeamish about the whole thing. She would not stay in the room while I was feeding; she wouldn't feed my son expressed breast milk; and she didn't want to talk about it at all.

Oh well, at least, she didn't go out of her way to talk me out of it or make me feel bad.

I am not personally offended by breastfeeding. I think its a natural and beautiful thing that you can do for your baby.

I do, however, get offended by the "Milk Mafia" who ear bash formula feeding mothers. I was unable to breastfeed my son which upset me and it only makes it worse when able mothers look at you disapprovingly when you are feeding your baby a bottle.

I just ask that people try to understand from both sides. Just because you formula feed your baby, doesnt make you a monster. There are some mothers who have legitimate reasons. For the mothers who CHOOSE to formula feed, even if they CAN breastfeed.. well thats their choice too so a little respect people.

Good Luck with your feeding. I hope people respect your wishes and opinions on the matter without judging.

I think people in general who are offended just aren't educated about the benefits

well it gets disturbing when the child is 3 yrs and older.

Doctors advise that you breast feed up to 2 yrs optionally but
6 mths minimum exclusively.
