For covered, nonexempt employees, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires overtime pay to be at least one and one-half times an employee's regular rate of pay after 40 hours of work in a workweek. Some exceptions apply under special circumstances to police and firefighters and to employees of hospitals and nursing homes.
Some states have overtime laws. In cases where an employee is subject to both the state and federal overtime laws, the employee is entitled to overtime according to the higher standard (i.e., the standard that will provide the higher overtime pay).
Unless specifically exempted, employees covered by the Act must receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a workweek at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rates of pay. There is no limit in the Act on the number of hours employees aged 16 and older may work in any workweek. The Act does not require overtime pay for work on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, or regular days of rest, as such.

It is down to the contract. Most employers do, but it isn't a right. Mine pays overtime for anything over 37.5 hours

yes this is illeagal
maybe it is time for you and your fellow employees to organise and talk with your employer about this issue
get a hold of a union hall or labor temple and they will be able to help you further
they can also direct you to the proper labor laws and statutes that your employer is violating
organise and get a union established within your current job and your employer will not be so apt to violate any oyher labor laws in the future

if you are contractual basis the employer is paying you hourly what i know is you will compensate your time on next day like if you have an overtime today for 3 hours you'll have to go to office 3 hours late on the next day!Unless the contract tells to pay overtime!

India is a country where Saturday is a working day at most places. and working 8 hrs a day its 48 hrs a week. it also depends on ur employers condition while joining.because in Indian labor law its not mentioned as 40hrs/week

I'm pretty sure that is illegal. Anything over forty hours per week must be paid as overtime. Call your state or county job service office.

this is a question you should ask the labor dept.i can't see how it would be legal because if one leaves then what happens to the extra hours they put in does the company pay

Totally illegal. You should be paid time and a half for every bit you work over 40hrs. in one week. Report their asses! Don't let them steal your life away and not compensate you financially!
