Get a sewing needle and strong thread.
Thread the needle and tie a knot in the end (two or three times to make it big), and you are going to draw the needle and thread up from the inside side of the fabric. Put the button on, threading the needle through it and push it all the way down to the fabric. Then take the needle and go through one of the other top holes in the button and through the fabric. Repeat a bunch of times, like 15, then for the last time, on the inside part of the fabric, draw the needle through the fabric in and back out on the inside part of the jeans... pull long enough to make a loop and then put the needle through the loop and pull until tight, this makes the final knot. Cut the thread and you are done.

A normal jean button? Well, if it ripped out, there isn't much you can do because the hole is too big. You can try sewing up the hole to make it fit around the button, but that can cause bunching and the button will slide.

You can also go to a local sewing center and buy a similar sized button -- normal, like you would find on a shirt -- and sew it on, covering up the hole. In order to get the button so that the jean material will fit over it, wrap the thread around the stitches under the button.

Also, sewing centers do have normal jean buttons, and someone there may be able to help you pick something that will work. That stuff is usually not that expensive (approx. $5), so it may be worth it to salvage a good pair of jeans.
