I got this question that counted as a big part of my grade:
"The area of a square is 180 feet squared. Find the perimeter. Round to the nearest hundreths place if necessary."
I am so confused right now. Can anyone help me not just with the answer, but how to do the actual work?

Thanks...I dunno why my teacher counted this wrong, when I wrote down my reason for the answer, it was what everyone said. o.O She's an odd teacher, she is.
Anyway, thanks, everyone. =)

Donald G...I think you're wrong, because despite the fact that the majority of people here agree on the same estimated answer, when I wrote my answer, I realized that my teacher checked it as incorrect only because I didn't round to the hundredths place.
So, er, yeah. And my answer was the same as everyone else's on here.

I might just do that, Donald. I might just do that. >=D
That would be so fun...proving a teacher wrong...well, telling a teacher that she is wrong because someone on yahoo proved her wrong...hey, that's even better.

square root of 180 = 13.416
13.416*4(four sides of square) = 53.66

When I learned math, I was taught to read the question carefully. What I read in your question is "The area of a square is 180 feet squared.", NOT " The area of a square is 180 square feet."
There is a vast difference ! The first statement says that the square is 180 feet on each side and the second statement says that the square is the square root of 180 feet on each side.
Therefore, the correct answer to the question would be; The perimeter of the square is 4* 180 = 720 feet.
To me it looks like a trick question to see if you are paying attention.
If your teacher disagrees with me, he or she is wrong and had better take a refresher course in mathematical protocol syntax.
O.K. Point taken .... but just for fun, show my answer to your teacher and see what she has to say. I still think that I'm right about my interpretation of the question. Thanks !

Perimeter is the distance around something.
A square has 4 equal sides.
If the area of a square is 180 ft^2, then each side must be the sqrt of 180 which is 13.416
The perimeter of a sqare is 4 x the length of a side, so its 4 x 13.416 = 53.67 feet

All sides are same length, and s^2 = area, so the length of each side is sqrt 180. The perimeter is the length of 4 sides, so multiply 4 times sqrt 180 to get the perimeter.
sqrt is square root.

To find the area of a square you must multiply length times width. Of course a square has four equal sides so you can get the square root of 180.
13.416 or 13.42
13.42 is the length and width . Since the square has four sides you need to multiply 13.42 by four.
The answer is 53.68. Perimeter

By definition, the area of a square is L^2 (squared) so take the square root of the area and that is the Lenght of each side then multiply times 4.

ok
The area of a square is computed by the square of one side
A=s^2
since we know A is 180, we can find the length of one side
180=s^2
s=13.42
The perimeter of a square is the length of all 4 sides or 4s
so . . .
P=4s
P=4(13.42)
P=53.68
The permiter of the square is 53.68 feet.

area of a square=side*side
side*side=area=180sft(given)
so side= sq.rt. of 180
=9*20=3rt20
perimeter=4 times the side
=4*3rt20=8 rt20
=53.67 ft
