1. an unpopular war with the history of an even more unpopuar war 35 years ago....no historical memory by the Republican leadership.

2. using fear as a tool to cause some Americans to believe they must give up freedoms and their morality.

3. corruption of more than a few Republicans (Democrats have had some in the past too, but the hubris of the majority party accentuated it) they were greedy at a record level.

4. most Americans are middle class and don't believe corporations need hand outs. People are employed, but they are underemployed...for some it is immoral to give tax breaks of thousands of dollars to the rich, when they get a couple hundred bucks.

There was a small shift among independent voters in a handful of districts and states, enough to change the majority in Congress, barely.

The shift was caused by

1) several recent scandals (sexual and influence peddling) by a small number of Republican office holders (4 I think, out of more than 250 total) where the publicity got worse and heavier close to the election.
2) US casualties in Iraq getting notably worse in October (probably a deliberate strategy of the insurgents) than in previous months, and the media heralding it as a trend, instead of a ploy
3) a second term President's party usually looses Congressional seats in the mid-term election,...that has been the pattern for more than 100 years. It is not very surprising.

Frustration regarding the recent (and not so recent) moves by the Republicans in the government.

State Biases (for example, Texas is a strongly Republican state, whereas Washington, where I live, is more divided).

The personal and professional backgrounds of the people running for office. Some people actually vote based on who will do the best job, rather than which political party they belong to.

The stated goals of those running for office. There are several issues being pressed, some people vote for the person supporting their ideals, rather than the party they are the least frustrated with.

Adam B, Libertarianism isn't a bad element interior the Republican party. The Libertarian party is crammed with disgruntled Republicans. decrease back to the question, Ron Paul replaced into saved out by way of fact he represented a coverage that replaced into very classic and intensely clever that replaced into according to suggestion of the Founders of usa, like no entanglements in remote places alliances, no imperative banks that replaced into strongly cautioned via Jefferson, no "vast brother" administration that Benjamin Franklin antagonistic, and no regulations that have been are pronounced interior the form. The media is somewhat biased, and in elementary terms charm themselves to politicians that violate the form, and people who screw the persons. no longer too forget, Ron Paul is an economist, he possibly knew have been going to flow right into a heavy recession on account that 2002, and has inspired a remote places coverage the place we don't deliver adult males into quagmires like Iraq, to no longer flow to conflict so military agencies enhance rich, and a society it extremely is according to sound funds like gold/silver, a society the place States have extra rights, and the government ought to proceed to be small and sparkling.

I pretty much agree with all the previous answers... of course after being deployed to Iraq while I was in the Army might show a little bias opinion but still... do you really think the common sense of the USA would stay a fugitive that much longer???

I am not American but live in a remote part of SE Asia. I am sure the whole world saw the American people wake up from their slumber and saw through the lies , misleading information and all that follows coming from Bush and his team , especially Rumsfeld. My friends and I did...

1. Going back in time ,we are all aware of the very specific difficulties between the Israelis and the Palestinians. Palestinians had their land taken away and given to the Israelis. This spawned deep resentment and hatred by the Palestinians. Their conflict involved the whole of the Middle East and also inflammed Muslim sentiments in all Muslim countries and Muslims around the globe. Antisemitic feelings reared its ugly head.

The wonderful Western alliance that that initiated this move to create Israel did not do their homework. A country full of decent ,law abiding humans were displaced and treated like they were animals.

The Western players like the US, UK and those from Europe seemed oblivious to the plight of the Palestinians , continued their support to Israel and unashamedly plundered oil from the oil producing countries of the mid East. The US being the biggest culprit..

All this led to esclating tensions between the peoples of Islam against the West. When you evict someone from his land unlawfully you must expect repercussions . The Palestinians retaliated losing thousands of lives over these many, many years. The flames of Islamic fundamentalism rekindled all these years. What did you expect ?

2. Until there came a time we refer to as the 9/11 which saw an Islamic fundamentalist attack on the New York Twin Towers killing more than three thousand innocent people.

The US retaliated by invading Afganistan and subsequently , in order to bring about a regime change in Iraq, using misguided and fabricated information , the USA made a unilateral decision to invade Iraq..Thousands upon thousands of US,UK and troops from many parts of the world were sent to fight in Afganistan and Iraq.

Many of these young soldiers , not knowing what they were fighting for and why , have lost their lives . The American public started to wake up.

This was the Republican gift to the world.

3. The US had by now opened a real, big Pandora's box releasing all kinds of suicide bombers , plotters and murderers bent on causing havoc, destruction and death to as many western infidels as possible. It is still going on in Iraq and in Afganistan , bombings have taken place in London and Madrid and it became increasing aware to the people in the US that they were seeing another debacle like in Vietnam.

The Republicans ,led by Bust , guided by the lair Rumsfeld , continued to be coaxed and mesmerised by dreams of victory ...After spending billions of USD the politicians simply had to paint a picture of certain victory over militarily inferior Afgans and Iraqi's.. The Republican war - mongerers continued with the war while many, many more young soldiers died away from home.

The US public slowly began to realise that there was something dreadfully wrong with the war and began to notice the lack of planning and tactics ........ military planning was bad,

With Bush planning to keep his troops in Afganistan and Iraq for as long as it takes , the US public now saw that many more soldiers were going to lay down their lives to a faulted US foriegn policy and and a misconception that America was being protected against an invasion of terrorists.

The illegal Guantanamo Bay and torture of prisoners are things the American public are not comfortable with and not likely to condone.

The Republicans did not read this message well. A swashbuckling President and his aides were too full of their own ego . The now very angry American public must have felt very heartened that a realistic and life saving decision could be made through the polls ........so a big welcome the the Democrats.

Hope this helps. This story has been unfolding over more than 5 decades. It has not ended.

The next President of the US may make a difference to the world in a very positive way.

The US needs a lady President. Welcome Hilary Clinton in two years.

I think most people were just fed up with politics-immigration, the war... It is possible that people who voted were not voting against the Republicans in general but sending a message that we want changes in the government. It is sickening what some of the people in our government are allowed to get away with.

People are tired of this mismanaged war that was based on lie.
Americans are tired of nasty partisan politics and want to return to bipartisan co-operation.
The middle class has been ignored in favor of the rich.
Illegal immigration is a big problem.

It is time for a change.

You can't win them all.
