An operating system (OS) is a computer program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer. At the foundation of all system software, the OS performs basic tasks such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing files. It also may provide a graphical user interface for higher level functions.

An operating system:
Windows NT based system:
Windows GUI
Microsoft's hevilly modded UNIX subsystem
basic I/o
The GUI manages everythin at the graphical level. the UNIX is more of the number cruncher The GUI sorta sits ontop of the UNIX subsystem.
Macintosh OS X
OSX's GUI and its many layers
(quartz, QT, cocoa, aqua, carbon)
a BSD based subsystem, which handles the IO
(Note, I/O is possibly controlled by MS's UNIX subsystem for NT based systems, but not much is known on the kernel.)
