I don't think there is such a thing as a "traditional" presidency. But there have been changes. One is the importance of being good on camera since the invention of TV. FDR used a wheelchair, but this didn't seem to affect his presidency. A visual negative like that would make it impossible now to become president. The televised debate between candidates Nixon and Kennedy were a turning point. There was not a clear winner, but those who saw the debate preferred Kennedy, and those who read the transcript preferred Nixon. Kennedy won the election. Nixon apparently didn't have proper make-up, and didn't look good on TV. Before that, who would have voted for a man who was known to use make-up? Now we understand that it is essential.
