it sounds to me like either it's just too early or she doesn't like the consintency of the food! and if she's breastfeeding she really doesn't even need solid foods until she is a year old as long as she is growing and progressing! with my little breastfed sweetheart who chokes on virtually everything and has no teeth, i tried baby food and mushed food for soooooooooo long! i even took her to the doctor because she would gag and spit it out or she would smack the spoon and glue her lips shut! the doctor continually told me my baby just simply wasn't ready. about a few weeks ago, when she was 9 and a half months ago she started stealing food off my plate. if i try to feed her, she refuses! but if i sit her on my lap and let her take things like rice and cooked pees off my plate and help herself she does just great! she only eats the equivellant of a spoonfull and fills up on breastmilk, but at least she's eating something! maybe you could try that. if not, just wait. a baby will never starve from not eating as long as the food is offered to her! good luck!!!!

Your daughter will not choke, especially as it is mashed. This dry retching is her natural response in learning how to chew and how to swallow. Keep going with this and in a matter of a week you will notice a huge difference in her ability to cope with solid foods. My daughter is the same age and is now managing to eat little peices of chicken and turkey and the veg are just soft, but not pureed. Persevere with this and it will all come good! Good luck!

There is this great product called the Baby Safe Feeder, I found them on the web and at a baby outlet store. They have netting and a handle, and you can put any food in there (or iced stuff, what have you) and the babies get to practice chewing at their own pace. It teaches them without risk of choking. It is like a miracle device.

Start with rice cereal flakes and mix them with water, formula or breastmilk. Make it really runny at first so it just slides down her throat. Get her used to drinking it from a spoon so its not a foreign object to her. Once she gets used to drinking it that way you can begin to thicken it up by using less liquid when mixing it. Once she is used to it being thicker you can add applesauce for taste and texture. Once she is used to that you can begin Gerber 1st step foods. Remember, baby steps. Good luck!

Put mashed potatoes in her bottle with milk. It will get her used to the taste of regular food. She'll then want it. If she still dry "heaves"??? ( is that what you meant) take her to the doctor and have her examined. She may have some kind of swallowing issues.

put it in a blender with water it'll make it into a soup like mixture that she should be able to get down...she might just have a really sensative gag reflex...ask the dr. about it at her next check up though just to make sure everything checks out ok.

they cannot have ANY chunks at all, buy the gerbers that say "stage 1" only, then slowly introduce the rest.
