Don't have any clue what portability or on your desk could possible have to do with it. Anyway Centrino is a branding name created by Intel that describes a set of processor chipset and wireless. So a computer labeled Centrino Duo most likely has a Core Duo processor, hence no difference. Although it is possible a Centrino Duo could have a Core 2 Duo, so check to be sure because a Core 2 Duo is better than a Core Duo.
As for the memory, the only difference is that you have two sticks instead of one, which allows you to run in dual channel mode, which is slightly faster.

Centrino is a term covering a range of systems with various processors with the addition of Intel wireless and Intel video in laptop form. Core Duo is one of those processors. Core 2 Duo is also one.
2x512 will use two slots while 1x1024 will use one. In a laptop, you will most likely max out at 1GB with the 2x512 option but will still be able to add memory with the 1x1024 option. Add a second 1x1024 and take it to 2GB.

intel core duo and intel centrino duo...both are one and the same thing. However Intel centrino core 2 duo (core 2) is the next generation with Two cores and higher processing speed touching 2 GHZ.
2x512 MB means there will be two memory modules of 512 MB Each making the total memory 1GB....this configuration will occupy two memory slots. so if the laptop has only 2 memory slots , both will be occupied and you will have problems upgrading the memory in the future
1X 1024 MB meand a total of 1GB mmory, only difference is that its a single memory module and will ocuupy one slot. so the 2nd slot is free and you can use it for upgrading in the future.
so 2X512 MB and 1X1024 MB is the same, Both equaling to 1GB. only difference is that 1st option will ocuupy 2 slots and the 2nd option will ocuppy only 1 slot.
Hope this helps

New Processor, Old Centrino
Before we get to talking about Core 2 Duo in notebooks, it's worth mentioning that Intel's Centrino marketing won't change with the introduction of the new processors. Although Centrino has taken a virtual backseat to Core 2 in recent months, the rules still remain unchanged. In order for an OEM to be able to call its notebook a Centrino or Centrino Duo it needs to meet the following requirements:
CPU Chipset Networking
Centrino
Intel Core Solo or Pentium M
Mobile Intel 945 GM/PM/GMS
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
Centrino Duo
Intel Core Duo or Core 2 Duo
Mobile Intel 945 GM/PM/GMS
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
Being able to sell a notebook as a Centrino or Centrino Duo is particularly important as Intel has invested a lot of money into the brand; in theory, the Centrino label should help sell your notebook better than without it. From Intel's perspective, the Centrino platform ensures that each OEM has to buy three pieces of Intel silicon instead of just one. Now you can see why AMD wants to get into the chipset market with ATI.
The important takeaway point from the above table is that Centrino Duo notebooks can use either Core Duo or Core 2 Duo processors. There's no additional branding designation if your Centrino Duo notebook comes with a Core 2 processor.
Backwards Compatibility
Intel's Core 2 Duo mobile launch is one of those very rare moments in Intel history where a brand new CPU is introduced and it is backwards compatible with existing motherboards.
If you've got a Core Duo notebook with a PGA Socket-M interface, all you should need is a BIOS update and a Core 2 Duo CPU to upgrade your notebook. If you've got a BGA CPU, then you're unfortunately out of luck as desoldering 479 balls from your motherboard without damaging it isn't for the faint of heart.
Obviously there are some caveats, and you'll want to check with your notebook manufacturer to make sure it supports Core 2 Duo on your particular model before upgrading.

If you will use the laptop mostly at home or next to a source of electricity i would go with the intel core duo, i'll benefit fully of the duo feature.
If you travel a lot or you are on the road a lot you better take the centrino, it saves battery power due to the less heat the CPU generates. In general heat sucks up power.

Intel middle 2 Duo and Centrino Duo are an identical with minor alterations. middle Duo is a advertising type to recommend a duo middle processor , in different words 2 Pentium M processors in one equipment. that is truthfully 2 processors equipment glued. middle 2 Duo is of a combining 2 pentium M processors in one silicon with out the glue reported above. the two processors shared an common point 2 Cache memory , and thereby, recuperating overall performance. A middle 2 duo is plenty greater suitable than an Intel middle duo that's the 1st era of duo processors. I think centrino is for laptops uses less battery power? 2X512mb means 2 memory sticks 512+512=1024mb, and 1x1024mb means 1 memory stick 1024mb, same amount of memory, but if you want to add more ram later then 1x1024 is better
p.s. 1x1024 is more expensive then 2x512

Depends on why you are getting a laptop. If you are getting a laptop to take up less space on your desktop, get a core duo. If you want it more portable, better battery life, get a centrino.
If your PC supports dual channel memory, get 2 512 sticks of RAM. The dual channel memory will make your machine faster. With laptops, usually you don't get dual channel support, in that case, get the 1GB stick of ram , so if you want to add mem later, you don't have to yank out a 512.
