I currently weight 101.4 pounds and bench press 160 pounds. I was wondering since I'm stronger than most if not all 103 lbs people, that if this would give me a great advantage or does technique win the matches.

Assuming you mean like, competitive high school or collegiate wrestling....

It's both. :) From what I have seen, Greco-Roman does focus more on strength, whereas freestyle or folkstyle does more technique, but the differences are small.

You are going to need strength so you can maintain position and not get pinned or scored on by your opponent's technique. Likewise, you will need technique so you can find the leverage *within the rules* to overcome your opponent's strength, as a lot of the ways technique *can* overcome superior strength almost require you to break the rules regarding "torturous" technique or illegal submission attempts, such as hammer-locking an arm past the 90-degree mark, for example.

One thing I would work on though, is doing diverse strength training....you likely know you should be doing squats to develop leg power so you can shoot in for a takedown...another idea is to work on pullups and/or seated rows to develop *pulling* arm strength to back up that shoot.

But yes, you need both. Especially in freestyle, especially in the lower weight divisions.

Hope this helps. :)

TV wrestling is acting. Greco-Roman, Catchis-Can and other real wrestling styles require skill and technique over strength. If you're weaker than the opponent by a slight margin but have better technique than he does, you will know your strengths and how to maximize what you have to work with. If you are simply strong but lack technique, you may be easily pinned or put into submission.

Technique oriented, Any system that relies totally on strength will fail at some point. That point is always when a weaker individual is forced to confront a stronger opponent. That is when technique has to come into play. Kyan Sensei never lost a confrontation and he was a very small individual in comparison. They reason he always won was his superior technique, superior theory and proper application of the two.

i believe everything requires technique.. and in wrestling, strength is needed as well.. a perfect mix of strength if technique is most affective, because if u dont have technique, but are hella buff, it wont really help.

btw it's amazing u can bench 160, great achienvement

You need to have technique too. Power alone wouldn't win you a damn match. My brother isn't just known for being stronger than everyone else on the roster, he's also recognized for his shoot skills. They don't call him Deadman for nothing.

In Greco Roman and Freestyle wrestling I believe it requires technique...and with your size, you should be killing them on the mat...are you?

maybe you could simply out muscle some scrubs but that is about it. how bad do you want to win? forget about bench pressing, or lets see one hundred reps of lighter weight. haven't you seen some light weight kid toss around the football running back yet? that is what you will get if you dedicate youself to this martial art of america.
