I'm not a doctor but I have had experience with canker sores myself and assure you that most doctors don't understand them. First of all, you mentioned a sore throat. This may or may not be related to the sores and might need to be treated separately. Also, make sure that the sores are not "fever blisters" caused by the Herpes Simplex virus. If they are, the treatment I am about to recommend will make them worse. If some of the sores are in the throat or even in the mouth, they are not fever blisters. The only effective treatment for canker sores that I have found is an oral paste called Kenalog in Orabase. Plain Orabase without the Kenalog won't do. The scientific name is Triamcinalone Acetonide and it is expensive. It requires a prescription but your doctor or dentist should be able to supply one. Apply directly to the sores as directed before going to bed and the paste must stay on the sores undisturbed all night. Several applications may be needed. I hate to tell you this but fighting it might be a lifelong battle. You might be able to avoid an attack in the future though. It's not an allergy but certain foods can exacerbate it. Does he eat a lot of mint? The volatile oils in mint and cinnamon can cause an outbreak. Even eating a lot of lifesavers and holding them in the mouth can do it. Anything which breaks the skin like braces, rough teeth, or biting his lip can start an attack. Even sleeping too near a heater and suffering dry cracked lips can do it. Hope this helps. Lots of luck.

It sounds to me as if your son has contracted the herpes virus, and antibiotics will not help since it is a viral infection, not bacterial. I would take him back to the doctor and make them give you some "herpes" medication. Many young children get this from schools and daycare, don't worry- it's treatable and with the rioght medication you can prevent or lessen more outbreaks. one of the first signs that someone has contracted herpes is a sore throat- is that what he was initally put on antibiotics for?

It sounds like he has an yeast infection (thrush) from the antibiotics. Give him some yogurt and take him back to the doctor.

The antibiotics may do the trick. He may have put something in his mouth that has the bacteria bacilococi. I recommend amoxcilin. Bless his heart.

By what you describe, it does sound like oral herpes. Check with your family doctor.

Get him medical attention now. He could be alergic to the antibiotics.
