Is Washington D.C. the only city not a state as it it not even in a state

This was a bonus question from a fifth grade teacher and that is the way she wrote it! I just thought since wash. d.c is not in a state it would be the right answer. A trick question for sure.

Just wanted to say the answer is Washington D.C. My grandson got it right as did every 5th, grader. thanks for all the responses

yep. it's not a state, it's just Washington DC. and DC stands for District of Columbia btw... i just learned this in APUS History. i thought Wash. DC was in Virginia this whole time! i'm such an idiot!!

It can't be Washington D.C. because every city can't also be a state - unless there are different cities throughout the U.S. that have the same names of states.

City States went out with the Greeks. Washington, DC is the only city (in US, I assume) not within a state. All the other cities are not states... but are within states.

no city in the usa is a state lol, they are within a state. what I think you are referring to is washington dc, not a state, but a district unto itself.....a state yet not a state. hope this helped!

There are places like Kentucky that are not states they are Commonwealths.
