white cross brown cross white cross..on the side of the road on highway 81 going down south... I have seen this more than once on the way to tenn.

It simply means someone was killed there. Sometimes the number of crosses indicates how many people died.

Well I'm wrong again. I've never seen these giant crosses.
Small crosses along the side of the road indicate a traffic death. I found your link though. Here you go.

Good question, I've noticed this since moving to VA as well! I doubt these are commemorating the death of someone killed in a car crash, as they are far off the road and much larger than your average roadside memorial (These are the size of telephone poles).

My best guess is these commemorate something significant about Highway 81 itself. Perhaps dealing with the civil war or early migration routes.

I've also seen these crosses along Highway 77 North in West Virginia.

It means, the middle of the cross is where christ had hung, the right side of the cross is where that one guy who was next to Jesus asked to be forgiven, the one on the left is the guy who went to hell. Its all along the south side of the states.
