My daughter is 5 months old and she used to never spit up when she was first born. But from about 2 months on she has been spitting up. Sometimes she spits up for a good 2 hours or so. During that 2 hours she probably spits up 3-5 times. And enough each time to change her bib. Is this a normal amount of spit-up? Or is it something I should be concerned about. She is burped well and I am not over feeding her.

For your information... I did report it to her doctor ... the doctor seemed as if its no big deal! But I'd rather get a second opinion!

hi there my daughter will be 5 months on the 14th of this month she has exactly the same problem throws up so so much its iritating ive been to docs ect he says as long as baby has 8 wet nappies a day and is gaining weight its fine.
sounds weired i no but ive asked several peoples opinion all say its normal my daughter throws up so much sometimes i swear she hasent got any food left in her but shes fat and wetting nappies so everything appears fine.
its usually is due to colic try getting her some sort of colic drops from chemist pharmacy i use infants friend its the best just give it to her befor a feed i swear it makes a huge difference also baby is always calmer always.
it could also have something to do with a little flap thingy sorry forget the name at the end of her osophagus some babys take time to strengthen that muscle up dont worry though its common.
another thing do you breastfeed or bottle feed sometimes the baby can be having a reaction to something you eat try eliminating some dairy ususally thats the culprit aswell as cabbage broccoli ect speak to your doctor about this. if she is bottle fed try changing her formula i beleive they sell some sorts of thicker formulas for babies with reflux you can also buy thickners i dont no i havent tried as i breastfeed.
well hopefully there was something there that can help you ive tried and i no how you feel as i go through the same thing if i can help you any further please feel free to contact me at mandymoo1983@yahoo.com.au goodluck.

I sounds like she has reflux. When you feed her keep her tipped up at like a 45 degree angle and try to keep her upright for about 45 minutes after any meal especially bottles. If the spit up is projectile and she is losing all of her formula ( and has not gained any weight) then I would definitely be concerned. If this is the case, I would push the doctor to do further examination and testing. I would definitely try the first thing I suggested first. I hope this helps!!! Good luck!

Well you sound like a great mom for sure because you allready ruled out my first two thoughts about burping and overfeeding. My son gave me great lessons on this. Try to measure what's going in and what's coming up.Is she keeping enough down to say it was a successful feeding if not she may be allergic or alittle intolerant. Also some bacterias are needed to process dairy based maybe the Dr. may say she needs some acidophilus. Also, make sure she is not putting weight on stomach and that the milk is not cold. Cold milk will do it everytime.

Is she just spitting up or is she projectile vomiting? Is she gaining weight normally? There is something called pyloric stenosis which can cause projectile vomiting and failure to gain weight. This is usually present and symptomatic from birth , however. It is when the muscle at the top of the stomach doesn't relax enough to let the food through, causing the vomiting.

I'm not sure, but I think that might have something to do with Colic? I know that makes babies super fussy, but I think it also has symptoms such as spitting up frequently and things like that. I would certainly ask her doctor, and yes, you should have done that sooner!
It's weird thinking of any sort of "normal amount of spit-up" but maybe there is.

You should ask her Dr about GERD. My son was born with it though. He screamed for the first three months of his life untill I finally took him to Arkansas Childrens hospital and he got medicin for it. It usually goes away around 7 months. It seems to me that shes 5 months old and just starting to spit up.
