It depends on what kind of service is being offered.
Like others mentioned here, if server staff is bringing you drink refills, clean plates, napkins, etc. then of course you would tip. If you are getting absolutely EVERYTHING yourself, then you would not. AND if server staff is bending over backwards to accomodate whatever special request you may have or running the server for everything but the kitchen sink,, then you should leave more than usual. Furthermore, if you and your brood are prone to pigging up your immediate area where you're dining then be really generous. After all, there are generally no busboys working in buffet restaurants thus server staff has the pleasure of cleaning up after YOU!!!
It's not going to break the bank to leave a tip for these people. You're spending less on your food generally than you would at even the most modestly-priced full-service restaurant. If you're really on a budget, then fast food is the way to go.
And for those of you who justify your no-tipping ways by stating that you have to get the food yourself, here's something to think about; did YOU cook all that food yourself? Did YOU prepare that beautiful salad bar all by YOURSELF? Did YOU bake all those fresh rolls and bakery items YOURSELF? And how long did it take to have a plate of food in front of YOU, even if you did have to get up off your @$$ and dish it out yourself? YOU didn't have to wait 10-20 minutes or even longer for an entree to be placed in front of you, did you? So stop acting like you had to slave over a hot stove because there are a number of people in the kitchen who did it for you. The point is, there are quite a number of people in the restaurant, both in the kitchen and on the floor, who work very hard for you to have that buffet experience.

I've worked at Chinese buffets over 8 years already. Most people don't know that waiters/waitress don't get paid hourly. Therefore their pay is based solely on what the customers tip them. It sounds wrong that the don't have a minimum wage but according to federal policies, if they agree to the working conditions then they don't require an hourly pay. This is because a lot of them don't speak English or they are comfortable around others who do speak their native language. They are given equal amounts of customers to each wait staff so when you have a group of 10 people that tip 1 dollar, it really affects them. Lastly, If you notice their bad mood when they get Hispanics/African Americans, This is because in the society Hispanics/African Americans are the worst tippers of all time. I constantly have a group of 10 African Americans who just leave and sometimes even try to evade paying the bill or often I get a group of 22 Mexicans/Puerto Ricans and I always try to give 5 star service but they still give me 1 dollar. In conclusion, some wait staff try really hard and some don't, but most of the time the customers still don't tip regardless of service.

They pick a random table or booth to seat me, I have to wait for someone (after going to get my own food) my drink order, which half the time they can t figure out how to change the soda concentrate bag-in-boxes, I go get my own food, the cooks do not have to cook anything at all to individual order, it s all the same, the "waitresses come by after flagging down to get my a refill, which I would GLADLY do on my own, just like at Arby s Taco Bell, and Burger King, and they take the plates away only when you set them at the edge of the table, usually in my family s experiences means they are stacked because they have sat through more than one trip to the buffet and back, and just because my 10 year old boy is the size of most oriental people or larger, they always forget about the price difference, which I pay in lieu of the tip.

Wow some human beings... to undesirable they're making $2.13 an hour. have faith it or not the top is what the waiter/waitress/bartenders proceed to exist. I understand that they don't take your order and positioned across you out the nutrition yet they nevertheless pay taxes on your nutrition you ordered. So in case you had to short them I say 15% yet incredibly, the main it is going to value you is one greater greenback or 2 and you're able to make that persons day. if the bill is 20 greenback then circulate away 4 - one can alway tip 20% and whether that is a social gathering of say 5 or greater, I consistently try this... 20% of bill plus a million dollar in line with guy or woman. It makes for an remarkable tip and the waiter will undergo in ideas.

I don't tip at the chinese buffet restaurant where no service is offered i.e., refill drinks. The staff clears away dishes and that's it.

It's really totally up to you as an individual. Buffet type of restaurant, regardless if it's Chinese or American, It's pretty much a help yourself to food service. I based my tip according to the type of service I received while dining, If my waiter/waitress brings my beverage, clean plates and attentive to my needs I always leave a tip but I based the amount I leave behind based on their attitude, mainly because buffet type of restaurant they're supposed to bring you your beverage and clean plates.

Absolutely I tip. The staff cleans the tables, refills the drinks and cleans the dirty plates. Restaurant workers usually dont make much salary and rely on tips *which are still split among everyone* Without tips, they're not looking at much take home $$

A buck here or there. Especially if they bring drinks and clear dishes. Nothing more.
And what that loudmouth above failed to realize is that you're paying $10-15 TO EAT THERE - believe it or not, the money for the cooks, staff, and flowers all comes out of the bill. That $15 isn't going straight into the owner's profits, leaving the poor defenseless cook to beg for patron tips.
Loudmouth servers would love it if you simple tripled the bill for a tip. It's bull - a buck, maybe two, no more.
Fricken whiners - like breathing air deserves a tip.

I would tip 10% of my total bills. Some of you may say you served yourself why tip but do you put the dirty plate away after you are finished? Answer is no. The staff refills your water/soda, clean up after you leave. Takes your dirty plate away so you have more room to eat. Tipping 10% at a buffet is general is not much at all. I think it's rude if you don't tip.
