I have an interview for a new job tomorrow and I just noticed I can't find my social security card. Does anyone know how long it takes to get a new one? Do you need one to get hired for a job or can you just show a birth certificate and drivers license or can they give you a temporary card untill your new one gets in? Anything will help thank-you! Dont know if it matters by state, but I live in ILLINOIS.

Check out the website below. You can download a form and mail it to obtain your new card.

You do not need this for an interview but if you are offered a job your employer can advise which forms of IDs you can bring.

By law they cannot tell you which IDs to bring they can only advise.

You need an SS card to get hired for a job. Also, you have to show it your first day on the job, as well as other identification. It could take a while to get a new card. Go to or call the Social Security Office where you live, maybe, under the circumstances it can be expedited for you. Explain what happened to your new manager.

depends on the job some do not need your card. It takes about a month or so to get a new one. your birth certificate will work hopefully. I would call the employer ahead of time to ask. It did not matter what state you were in because the SS card is federal.

Don't worry your just on your interview. Your Social Security card takes 10 business days to come in the mail. So you just tell them your situation and if they let you work and bring your card as soon as it comes in. I'm sure everything will work out OK. Good Luck!!

You could get by with those two ids. If you go to the SS office, it will take about 7 business days to get it in the mail, but they do give you a receipt which you can use to get driver's license so a job should take the receipt as well.

I think that if you can get to the Social Security office, that they can issue one quickly. Just give them a call.
