Some landlords don't change the locks over; check with the state renter's rules to see if it is a requirement because it isn't in a lot of states.

Changing a lock is easy; all you need is a screwdriver. There are usually instructions in the package that comes with the new lock.
Just be sure to give the landlord a key; legally he needs to have one.

Other theft deterrent ideas: Place stickers on your windows and doors that say "protected by security company". You can get motion detectors that don't require drilling to install. Another idea would be to place some really large used boots outside your door. No one is going to mess with you if they think that a 7 foot guy lives there! A large dog bowl outside your door might do the same thing, if it doesn't look too obvious. You actually might consider getting a dog. Even a small dog makes a great watchdog.
Hope this helps!

Changing the locks isn't a bad idea, but if it's security against intruders you want, there's a device to get at your local hardware store.

I don't know what it's called, but it screws into the doorjamb on the doorknob side, and when you're home you flip it over and it's like the door has hinges on both sides. It's unpickable, and they are simply not getting in without taking down the doorframe. It costs about two bucks.

If the landlord gives you grief about it when you move, say "hey, that was here when I moved in."

I live in Texas and it is the law that when one tenant moves out the locks have to be changed. Will the landlord not do it for you? Or at least have one of his maintenance men install the locks for you?
