The best way to give a baby a healthy start is to breast feed. Breast feeding makes babies stronger as well as hydrated. Giving a baby water is a bad idea because it throws off their electrolyte balance. At this age babies only need breast milk or formula for all their needs. After 6 months of age they can have a few more things introduced in the appropriate way, with guidance from baby's pediatrician.

Water is always good to give to your baby. It also helps reduce thrush, the white stuff on the babies tongue. I gave my babies water and recommend that all parents do the same. Also, this will help the baby from choking in their sleep too. Most babies should be given water when they are about two days old. Don't worry, most babies don't like it and that's why parents put sugar in the water. Just make sure they get a little to wash down the milk or formula. Good luck and GOD bless.

My first born developed a cold at 2 weeks of age, and when we went to the doctors he told us the only we could do was to keep him hydrated. When I told him that he was feeding ok, he asked if babies were allowed to feel thirsty? I had never thought of it, but it makes sense. Boiled water, at room temperature is actually good for babies, between feeds. According to the doctors and the two child health nurses I have had, it is important.

the salt and sugar bit would be really harmful to the baby's health, and growth, I would imagine.

No no no. This is a terrible idea. Water is not okay to give to a baby under a year of age. The only fluid he should be ingesting is breastmilk.

Water will fill him up without providing any nutrients, which is extremely dangerous to someone growing so quickly.
