It's been said by the powers that be that the hiatas is due to numerous fan complaints the first two seasons. The first two seasons had many repeats placed in between the new episodes and that annoyed the fans. So this year they decided to try something different. Run the first 6 episodes (which they filmed over the summer), then take the 13 weeks that the show is on hiatas to film the remainder of the 16 episodes. If they didn't do it this way, we would have one new episode, then two repeats, and so on.

A lot of viewers complained about having repeats in-between new episodes, the way it was the last two seasons. A new episode would come along maybe every 3 or 4 weeks, but people would lose track and miss that new episode.
The reason why they can't hurry up and make more episodes, like some other answers here have suggested, is because it's just not physically possible to make them that quickly. "Lost" has an incredibly high production value and that takes time. The writers have to figure out where they want to take the story, they've got to find the right locations to shoot, the actors' schedules have to be set, the scenes have to get shot, the editors have to splice everything together ... and all of this has to be done really well so that fans stick around.
I'm actually looking forward to this new schedule. I've enjoyed these fall episodes and I can't wait for February, and I'm really happy I won't get mixed up and miss any!

Because, ever since Fox redefined the TV schedule with American Idol, 24, and the early launch of Fall shows for the World Series a few years back the other networks have had change their schedules too.
During the first two seasons fans complained about the way they would just stop and rerun episodes almost at random through out the season, so they are running a no rerun season, and to have fresh episodes in Nov.,Feb., and May sweeps they ran 6 episodes now and will run the other 16 in the spring straight through.
Back in the day the TV season would start in Sept. around Labor Day, they would run 6-7 episodes, and then re-run them again, and lead into another 10-12 episodes, shifting them as needed to run seasonal shows, like Charlie Brown's holiday's, Parades, Major sports games, etc., then they would run out the last of the episodes finishing out the season in May with their cliffhangers, and Series Finale's. The Summer from June - August would be all reruns all the time. When Cable started to make original shows they aired them in the Summer w/o any original competition. The networks could no longer assume people would watch the reruns so now you see original shows on broadcast in the summer as well, but mostly as filler.
For anyone interested, Jericho on CBS will be taking a similar break in their schedule starting at or around Thanksgiving, and they will be back in February as well, you may also recall that Prison Break on Fox, did that last season too.

Last season there was an issue with them running reruns every couple of weeks and people not knowing when to tune in for the new episode and missing it. So, to avoid that confusion, they're just skipping half the season. Personally, I don't understand why they don't just make more episodes, or have a shorter season.

I agree. I think they are worrying about the competition from the other series! Lost was really good at first, then all the reruns ], now they are stumped so they have to come up with something more exciting to take back there timeslot and keep the viewers. Why is Abc putting so many good shows on the same night??Too many good series and only one DVR!!!

My husband and I were discussing that same thing this evening... we think either something is going to be on TV within the next few months that it does not want to compete against ratings wise.. or they are leaving more of a cliffhanger because some people are losing interest because it seems as though the plot is not really going as fast as some people might want. We are a instant gratification type of society. I personally love the show !!

IMO, ABC and Lost want to create more hype for the show by airing reruns and be in the running for the Emmys. They will be competing with other premium cable series like The Sopranos, which are in their finale season. They do it to stay competitive!

I don't understand this new fall season finale. I was really enjoying the show and can say that I am upset they are doing this. Perhaps to obtain that high a quality show, they need the extra time to produce it.
By the way, I hope that jerk dies on the table but I know he won't.

Oh my thing with Lost I think that the island is a pergatory you know a place between heaven and hell. And when the black cloud comes thats the devil coming to get you and when Kate and Jack and Sawyer got taken I think it's because they have sins to make up for. and the Others arent reall bad they're like Angels working for God and when some dies on the island they go to heaven.
