Because the only people who are religious(ANY RELIGION)are pathetic.. Religion is the biggest causer of deaths and suppression in the history of the world.... You are born ,You live,Then you die.THE END....Nothing else....Anybody with any kind of inteligance knows this to be true.............As for the Americans,. Well some of the first colonist came here to practice their religion so they were not being persecuted. So religion has always played a big role in America since we stole, er that not very religious is it?, uh borrowed the Native American land. So is it any surprise it's still thriving? Besides that America is very diverse so the religion is also diverse. Of course that doesn't mean everyone is so religious since we have a good share of atheist. Some just believe in a higher power which ties into no religion.

It is worth remembering that over 80% of Americans live in town of less than 20,000 people. Because their country is so huge (geographically) they consist of a large number of very scattered communties. These people tend to view the big cities, with some fairness, as cauldrons of evil.
They are ill served by a parochial press and a television service which is obsessed with ratings and cowardly.
They have more than their share of religious fanatics, some of whom make a fat living out of their fanaticism.
So they do not get taught, they do not hear the other point of view. They end up with cars computers TV's everything except the ability to question and think for themselves.
So religion is their 'fallback' position. They cannot question it because it is their only way of making sense of the world.
So they dont. Hence they are 'so into religion'
Which leads to interesting contradictions. . .abortions are wrong because they murder babies. . .well maybe. . but the same people think it is OK to kill maybe 300,000 Iraqis.
Stem cell research is wrong. . . but how many of those arguing against it would refuse a cure for a son who had say, diabetes, if that cure came from stem cell research.
Like fundamentalist Muslims they know they are right and that God is on their side.
The fact that 'God' sent them Hurricane Katrina etc. . oh well one could go on.
But that's my view.

its not all Americans that are into religion, its only the red neck central states that seem to go crazy over the idea, the educated coastal regions where all the big city's are seem more stable. buts what is really funny is that its was the red neck areas that voted g bush into power, shows how down to earth the red necks are

I think there is that strong tradition of being, 'One nation under God' and a possible reaction to rampant commercialism of all aspects of life giving a stronger need to be fulfilled spiritually. I think it has to be seen as a symptom of a need to believe and few nations are as patriotic but the administrations do tend to disillusion more than inspire so why not look to a higher authority

intelligence is not an important thing apparently
it is an integral part of our type of freedom being uneducated or having far out believes is accepted - because we wouldn't want to appear judgmental - in this type of climate judging someones beliefs is not allowed - so we have the normal thoughtful religious types and a large percentage of fringe beliefs ( from snake handling to blessed underwear )
but it is this diversity and acceptance that makes our society what it is - the most influential and powerful society on earth
we also have the right to not read an entire answer - thumbs down to you narrow minded types also

Well, this country was built on a foundation of religious freedom. When immigrants first started coming to this country it was to escape the religious intolerance of their own countries.
