i find it disgusting that a dog be put down for biting a person. Men nowadays can rape a woman and get off without a slap on the hand, but if a dog is being taunted and abused it is punished for defending itself.
I also find it disgusting that a dog can be socialized to be violent, and then be put down because it cannot be 'rehabilitated.' Shouldn't we put as much effort into resocializing the animal? For God's sake, it's not it's fault it was traumatized and forced into this state of mind. We punish a creature for being punished from birth. It's hypocritical and downright evil.
To the person who spoke about rabies: if a person is bitten, they automatically can choose to take the medical procedures necessary to prevent/cure rabiesm, and insurance WILL cover it. All they have to say is "possible exposure." A veterinarian can monitor the animal and see if there is any degeneration in the animal as well.
Don't go near the animal if it's growling at you. If you do, you're at fault.
For God's sake, don't kill something because it pissed you off. If you provoke a creature, don't think you're immortal. You damn well deserve a bite.
And btw, I have been chased by dogs trying to bite me. I've been very afraid, and I still wouldn't want them put down for doing it. I'd rather have them taken away from a bad situation and resocialized, and treated humanely.

I agree and disagree. I think it should really depend on the case. Your right many animal attacks are provoked and it's horrible when a dog gets death for protecting it's self. I don't think those dogs should get put down! However there are some dogs that are brought up aggressive. They bite because that's what they are trained to do. So they could never be safely put into a home. Even no kill shelters put aggressive dogs down because they know they cannot get a home. Which again is horrible because it's not their fault they were taught that. But there, as far as I know, isn't a place where aggressive dogs can go to live out their life. I hope some day there is.
More power to you though! I'm sure your going to make a great vet as passionate as you sound.

I disagree with you..I work in a Veterinary clinic and have for 15 years.. I have seen many unprovoked attacks....i have been bitten many times by aggressive and mean animals for no reason..There are so many untrained dogs and dogs that are trained to be mean...i understand the way you think...but it is unrealistic...There are many dogs already that have no homes running the streets and in the shelters... and there are many more dogs being breed every day.. BTW... Have you ever been attacked by an animal?? I have taken care of animals that were on a 10 day Rabies Quarantine that were so aggressive that the dog actually rammed his head into the run door trying to get out...the list goes on.. anyway they are not put to sleep on the first bite--it is after the 3rd one..that says there is a problem..don't you think??

Not all vets euthanize just because of a dog biting someone! Not all Vets charge to euthanize either! They stand to make no profit from that! The animal is more profitable alive! There are many other factors that have to come into play! Like if the dog is a possible rabbies carrier! ( well then the head comes off) You cant save every animal out there. If you are that emotional about saving all the animals then you should consider another career!

How do you realize he HAS rabies? He must be bitten with the help of something that has the virus, it would not spontaneously look out of nowhere. canines with rabies are quarantined for 15 days. in the event that they have it then they're lifeless earlier the 15 days are up. in the event that they have not got it, they're nevertheless alive. become your canine vaccinated against rabies, as required with the help of the regulation? If he become every time interior the previous 3 years he can not be contaminated with the help of it and is not rabid. A rabid canine can not consume or drink through fact the virus freezes the throat muscular tissues. if your canine is ingesting and ingesting, that is all on your head. A vet may well be little need for combating rabies, it can not be stopped if the virus is already interior the canine. yet what i prefer to nicely known is why you do not in basic terms %. up the telephone and contact the vet? A telephone call is unfastened and that they might talk with you approximately this as we talk, freed from fee. Duh?

I think the law enforces when the animal gets put down depending on the severity of the attack, and yes if it is just for acting like an animal that would be stupid, and yes most of the time it is provoked. Humans are the most cruel and abusive life form out there that I know and it is man's inhumanity to man and Gods creatures and children that infuriate me the most!

I am a loving dog owner, but dogs that bite humans are frequently not trustworthy. The liability the owner carries for a biting dog can wipe out one's life's savings, and failure to get rid of a biting dog can nullify insurance.
Where will you send these biting dogs? Innocent dogs are euthanized daily because there are no homes for them. Would you send the biting dogs to foster homes where they are even less likely than the innocent dogs to gain adoption?
Veterinarians who euthanize dogs are not money hungry. They would earn more by treating the dog over the longer years of life. They are doing the best they can to help with the animal population and the human/animal interaction.
Your frame of reference seems really idealistic and skewed. I have doubts that you are truly a 5th year veterinary student. You certainly sound highly unprofessional, and as such, I would steer clear of your practice.

wow...as i agree with you on most of what you said..must always remember like a man who hits a woman IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN...Same goes for bitting dogs,Many humans are provoked but dont run around bitting each other (ok well most the time lol)...That is the difference between human and animals, they dont have the thought process to think about it, rather just to react..that i my thought anyway, and i am a dog owner who loves her dog soooooooo much..p.s. shes a beagle her name Nibbles Bye

No it is not extreme and I disagree. Your choice of career may have warped your perspective on whether people or animals are more important.
Do you have an alternative penalty for a dog that bites and traumatizes a child? Maybe a timeout or withholding doggie-treats will discourage that type of behavior from being repeated.
I also don't agree with your "blame the victim" reasoning that most dog attacks are provoked. If a kid touches a dog and the dog reacts with a bite did that kid cause an equivalent injury with that "provocation?" Get real.
Do your fellow "money hungry stupid veterinarian" students agree with your view?

Dogs don't learn discipline the same as humans, yes they do learn it but in the case of biting, who would we teach then not to unless we caught them in the act? What should we do send them to doggie prison, that wouldn't teach them anything because they get locked up in the pound all the time. Even if they did feel bad they wouldn't know why, so unless you can come up with a better option I don't know of any other choice.
