Total points so far earned by the student=97+89+85+99=370
Therefore points required to be earned in the final exam=540-370=170.
[I am sure that the student did not get 99 in math.]

Well, I hope this is what you mean, but it seems too easy?
Just add the marks he's received so far: 97+89+85+99. This equals 370. If he has to get 540 points for an A, then he needs to get 170 out of a possible 200 in the final exam. (540 less 370)

Does your teacher want this in a formula? If so let x equal to the minimum number of points you need to make an A.

540= X+97+89+85+99
Now you collect the terms by adding all the knowns 97+89+85+99: Which comes out to 370:
Now you have:
540=x+370 with x being the points you are going to need to get an A:

Next step you add the additive inverse to both sides of the formula because what you do to one side of the equation sign (equal sign) you have to do to the other side.

Now the expression becomes:

540 +(-370)=x+ 370+(-370) Now always keep in mind this simple fact in Alg. when an expression is written as in this case (-340) what is means is 1*(-340) and a positive times a negative is going to equal to a negative. so that it expression now becomes:

540+1*(-370)=x+370+1*(-370)
again collecting the terms it now becomes:
540 - 370=x +370 - 370

540-370 is 170 and +370 -370 is 0

so your answer is:

170=x with x being the minimum number of points you need to make an A.

This means you are going to need to get a minimum of 170 points on the final to make an A.

let x=the points needed on the final

Take 97+89+85+99+x divided by 5 >/= 540

Do the average, solve for x. It's an inequality, because she must earn at least or more than a set point.
