I know what the signs and symptoms of labor are, but did you just kind of know that it was coming on?

No. I was in 'early' labor for several hours before I actually knew what it was. I thought it was braxton hicks contractions coupled with painful gas. I was one week overdue, and scheduled for an induction the next morning.
It stayed consistent about 10 minutes apart throughout that evening and the night, but once they added the induction drugs, it jumped to every two minutes, lasting almost 2 minutes each! It sucked, but my son was born a quick 8 hours later.
