Dell Inspiron or Toshiba lapotops are a good buy. But as someone rightly said; its a mix of your budget and computing needs.

You have to give us a lot more details like your budget, what size screen you want, what you will use it for, etc.
A great place to go is notebookreview.com and go to the forums there where a lot of people ask questions about what laptop to buy and get them well answered. Its an enormous laptop forum.
Anyways, the Apple Macbooks are great all round laptops, especially for students, jack of a lot of trades and master of none.
IBMs are very well built and have great keyboards, but are very expensive and suited for business environments.
Dells Inspirons are all around decent notebooks and the XPS series are really good, like the M1210. I also recommend HP/Compaq.
Good luck.

right now it's kind of tough to choose. though the prices are reasonable, both HP and Dell are having battery and power supply problems (compaq is owned by HP) and Toshiba doesn't make many lightweight laptops. I recommend an IBM thinkpad T43/T60 or for a lightweight laptop an X- series. if you are looking for more of a mainstream or slightly less expensive brand then go for a Gateway -- they have very nice LCD screens.

Buy an Apple Macbook and get a copy of Windows XP for it. Then you have the most reliable computer in the world and you have the best of all possible worlds. Its like getting two computers for the price of one really good one. Starts at around $1000.

Hello dear am Sam a network engineer,
As read your Que. I learned your yor mind you are a type of girls who takes suggetion and then picks one of them with a wisdom.
Here is my answer:
I thinks laptops are made for mobility go for 15" screen only, its should have a 6-8cell battery for longer backup, dvd writter is very impotant hese days should go it too,bluetooth,Wi-Fi is too important ,RAM should be at least 512 MB I think we can purchase such a laptop/Notebook of Lenovo ,as these are inyour price range and with a effective brand name.
Good luck dear.... (rilsam2004@yahoo.co.in)
