At this age he could have just over stimulated himself, or needed to have a change in what he was doing. He could have been frustrated trying to reach for something he couldn't. This type of behavior is so common in babies this age. I know these things from working with an early child development team. Plus my children used to do this all the time. Unless he's got any medical symptoms, such as running a fever or changes in eating or bowel movements then this is the most likely cause.

I know nothing of medical opinion here so be warned that my suggestions will hold no ground in a-typical western science.
Do you have any "faith"?
I firmly believe that doctors should be a last resort when dealing with a short concentrated issue. Obviously if any apparent discomfort persists and pain is evident then Id be at a doc immediately but be sure that you don't lose what is essentially one of the strongest connections you may have with an individual simply because you want a doctor to explain a series of chemical reactions that have occured that can only be dealt with through either "physical manipulation/operation or pharmacuticals!
Remember that your child (significantly a member of the opposite sex to you) is as much a part of you when he departs the "primoridal mound" as when he is firmly inside you, breathing your air, consuming your diet and feeling your energy from within.
I would spend time with him while his asleep, sitting beside him in silence and totally concentrating on him. Feeling and most importantly listening to your consciousness or "inner voice" tell you the story of his "FREAK OUT". Im sure that with some good old fashioned faith you may well find that all you needed to do was talk to your son a "soothing, calm tone that delivers a strong message of inter-dependence".
NO doctor in the world is as in tune as you are with your child. Remeber that in many but not all cases, a doctor is treating a chemical reaction with yet another chemical.
As a "suggested amputee at age 6", I spent much time in this type of "pain". Its amazing how with faith and a bit of luck, the doctors could not describe how I had been so fortunate. They said without such firm determination to succeed I would have lost my leg most definately.
they called it luck!!!!

Maybe one of his nappy pins was poking him?
Maybe he has a bit of a nappy rash and he just peed on it, which would sting like crazy.
Maybe he thwacked himself in the face with the toy and you didn't notice.
Just some thoughts. But it doesn't sound like it could possibly be anything serious, whatever it is.

Are you sure he didn't get hurt somehow by the toy? That doesn't sound normal but I wouldn't worry, who know's what caused him to do that? Just keep a close eye on him and if he does it again take him to his doctor to be checked.

Maybe a gas bubble got stuck... then passed. Or he might have scared himself somehow with the toy, I'm sure he's fine...Might be something as simple as a toe nail bending, or his knee cracking. OR he might have gotten scared thinking he was alone ? Forgetting where he was ?

My son has done this also. It usually means that he is hurting somewhere. It could be a lot of things. I guess you might want to call the doctor.

i do not think you should worry. if it would make you feel better then i would call his doctor in the morning as long as he is sleeping ok. it could very well have been a gas pain or something could have startled him or any numerous things could have triggered thi emotional outburst.

Don't panic! But call your pediatrician and if it is too late call an ER nurse or Dr. They generally will let you know whether it is normal or a sign of any problems your little boy might have.

He might have had a gas pain, or it could be an ear infection. If he does it again while lying down, take him to the pediatrician and have them check his ears to be sure.
