Go to the US savings bonds website and look up the maturity date. The bond has the amount listed on it, and it probably has the date on it as well, but if you can't find it, look it up.

Savings Bonds mature in a specific amount of time. If it was bought in 1998, you have to make sure that it has matured before you attempt to get any value for it.

It should say on the bond how long it will take before it is a "mature" bond.

Take it to a bank and they can look up the number and tell you exactly how much it is worth.
